I am using Direct X 8 and I have heard that you can not take it off the machine. Is this true ?

I loaded Tomb Raider III and the last screen froze up and did not come to the choices (play, exit, etc.) screen. I have a Pent II, 266. SB Live sound card, 160 ram. Particioned it. Windows on C, Apps on D and extra hard drive for games (E). Cannot figure out why it would freeze. Could it be Direct X 8 ? or what ?

    Hi kckitchen,

Yes, it's true that DirectX can't be uninstalled. I did find lots of information at this MS DirectX site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp

On the download page, there is an update for DirectX8, also a DirectX8.0a, and a DirectX8.1

    http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/faq.asp
    Q. How do I uninstall DirectX?

    A. DirectX 8.1 is a system component and cannot be uninstalled. If there is a problem with the DirectX install, it can normally be resolved by shutting down all running applications and reinstalling. As mentioned previously, DirectX 8.1 is fully backward- compatible with titles written for previous versions of DirectX. If you are having other problems after installing DirectX 8.1, these can often be resolved by installing updated drivers for your display card, audio card, or input device.

    Q. I have a question about the DirectX runtime that isn't covered in this FAQ. Where can I look?

    A. A more technical Frequently Asked Questions list is located HERE.

kckitchen--Here is a program that claims to do it.

I have never used it, so cannot endorse it. Ramona's info would certainly make me think twice!!
However you could also reformat your hard drive if you are desperate!! :D
