    I have a Hewlett Packard computer running Windows 98 SE that I got from a local Rent A Center. When I got the computer it had Direct X 6.1 installed, everything seemed to be running as it should.

    Today I downloaded a program that required me to have at least Direct X 8.1 installed, so in order to make the program work, I had to upgrade to Direct X 9.0b.

    Everything seemed to continue working for a while, but now, one significant problem I've noticed since getting 9.0b, is that when I click on website links that use javascript to make a pop up window come up, the pop ups don't come up. This also occurs with links that call for a new window to come up without using javascripting. (ie: links in emails)...

    Also, I can't seem to download anything from the windows update site. The licence agreement box comes up, but after I click "I accept ", the download/install box doesn't come up.

    And when I run the Direct X diagnostics, the version is still showing it to be 6.1

    Could this be a Direct X9.0b problem, or something else?
    Any help to resolve this will be appreciated. Thanks.

    What browser are you using?
    Do you have any pop-up stopper program, or pop-up stopper plug-in installed?

    I'm currently using Internet Explorer 5.5 (LIke Direct X 6.1 it was installed on the computer when I got it). I haven't had the time to install IE 6 yet. I intend to install IE 6 today to see if this resolves the problem, but since IE 5.5 had been working fine until I got Direct X 9.0b, I'm wondering if getting IE 6 will help.

    >Do you have any pop-up stopper program, or pop-up stopper plug-in installed?

    Yes I do. But at the moment (and since this problem initially began), I disabled the pop up stopper program, and it didn't help.

    Specs for directx 9.0b recommends minimum patches sp2 if using IE5.5 or sp1 if using IE6.0.

    =======
    If in doubt of a successful directx install, download and do it again. Rather than allow MS to auto-install download the whole shabang to your harddrive. Shutdown/endtask for running apps with the exceptions of explorer and systray (cntrl/alt/del>task manager will allow a check and endtasking). Than reinstall directx:

    =========
    Additional quote from Directx support:
    If you are having other problems after installing DirectX 9.0, these can often be resolved by installing updated drivers for your display card, audio card, or input device (such as mouse, joystick etc).

    ==========
    Link problem can be further addressed after installing IE updates per recommendations and after eliminating the possibility of an incomplete or corrupted install of directx.

    (Crossing my fingers)..here's to hoping the link problem disappears after doing the above^.

    Well, I re-installed DX 9.0b while having all apps turned off, and then I finally installed IE 6.0 (with all apps turned off), and I'm happy to report that (so far), things seem to be working again.

    I appreciate the help everyone. :)

    Well, they didn't say anything to me both face to face when I rented it, and I didn't see anything in the contract that says anything about that. But if it makes a difference, I'm actually renting this computer to own it. (after I make 78 payments).
