I have connected my Win98 desktop to my winme laptop. Both computers show they are connected! However I can't find any interconnection to transfer the file I want from the laptop. I have set both to file share! What I can't do is find any Network Neighbors button or a computer under the Find key! Don,t get a mapping popup either. I assumed I would get another drive shown in explorer that would allow me to drag or copy! Please give me some clues to try. I have spent hours with the help index trying things to no avail! Thanks KenB

Do you have file & printer sharing turned on?

Do you have any folder(s) shared?

Yes file sharing is allowed. How do you set up specific files to be shared or copied?

Set up "shares" on a folder or a bunch of folders. Easiest IMO is from windows explorer to right-click on the folder select sharing and go from there. And BTW - the share name does not have to match the folder name. You will continue to see the normal folder name (but with a hand symbol on it) from the PC but folks looking via the network will see the share name.

To use/copy/whatever from the share you have several options.

If it's use is going to be more than occasional, easiest to map a drive letter to that share. From windows explorer tools~map network drive. You can keep the default drive letter which will be the first free one or you can pick another letter as long as it isn't in use.

In the line for "path" enter the \\computername\sharename and check the box for "reconnect at ... "

If you are a DOS/command line fan, then from a DOS window (with windows running)
    net use x: \\computername\sharename /persistent
will do the same thing where x: is any free drive letter you have.

For occasional use, some folks like to browse for the share in Network Neighborhood and open it from there.

My preference (since I find Network Neighborhood slow and not always reliable) is start~run~\\computername\sharename and ENTER which will open the folder for you.
