I want to connect two computers together via crossover cable, Nic to Nic, for the purpose of file and internet sharing.

Host is XP pro running on an NT Domain (dialing in from home)
Guest is W95 on a home network.

    Can this be done?

Not a problem. Load NetBeui on both PCs and make sure TCP/IP isn't bound to the NIC you use to connect the two PCs.

If your dial-in is via phone line/modem rather than a broadband connection it will be dead easy. If you have a NIC connecting you to a broadband connection it can still be done fairly simply but you gotta do an extra thing or two.

You could even set up to have both PCs connect to the internet if you wanted but again, couple things you'd have to do differently.

So, as in the domain/workgroup post, describe your system in more detail.

    My systems:

    The host:

    XP Pro

Normal setup is an NT Domain member, using NIC card-office network configuration.

Home setup is dial up through 56k modem, still log onto the computer via the pdc-domain.

    The Guest:

    W95

spare laptop computer can be set up any way.

Has no modem, has a NIC card.

    The connection:

Attempting to connect the two by nic using crossover cable

OK. Got it and I think the below will work for you. If not, post back since a thing or two may need some tweaking. I don't have a similar setup to play with so can't test this first.

    - load NetBeui on the XP PC. It is on the install disk but sorta hidden since Microsoft wants us to quit using it. Specifics on doing the deed are Here

    - Set up the 9x box with just NetBeui. Make it's workgroup name the same as the domain name on the XP system.

    - Set the 9x box to require a logon. And make one with both username and non-blank password.

    - XP in the "manage" section add a local user with the exact same username/password the 9x box has. Case sensitive so exact match. Then add the 9x user to the group that fits your needs. Administrator will give it full access to the XP box.

You should now be good to go. NetBeui can just stay on your XP box since it doesn't see TCP/IP and isn't seen by it. No conflicts. No changes you need to make from home to office on the XP system.
