Okay ....... I installed the software that came with the Kodak digital camera that I purchased (I purchased it used so no manual came with the camera). I took some pictures and them connected the camera to the computer. The software is telling me that it cannot connect to the camera and then list a couple of different things that could be the problem. I checked them all out except for the one that says "verify that the serial port is not being used by any other device, such as a modem ". How exactly do I do this? (sorry I know this might be a silly question, but I REALLY am computer illeterate!)

    Thanks :)

    Kimberlee,

Depends which OS you are using, but basically .....

In XP go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems

In 98 go to Control Panel > Modems > Diagnostics

But surely your camera is connected to a USB port?

Best to check in BIOS that USB is enabled - unless you are already using another USB device.

Download a manual from here ....

Edit : Just realsed this is the 98 Forum so guess you are on 98

What is the difference between a serial port and a USB? :D

And, how do I check in BIOS?

    Thanks

Kimberlee - A USB port looks like the end of the cable you are using to attach your camera to the computer (Assuming your camera uses USB). Do you know how to get to your BIOS? Depends but try upon start or restart pressing down the Del key when you first see your computer makers "splash" screen and this should take you into setup (BIOS) In the BIOS functions list should be Advanced BIOS features - Hilite that and click enter then on the next page arrow down the list till you see USB and enable the ports if they are disabled. (If the Del key doesn't do it for you try tapping F8 when splash screen appears.) Good luck.

Finally got it figured out! Yesterday I started up the computer and the camera gave me the option of COM1 to use to connect (before I only had the option of COM2 and COM3) It connected right away. THEN I tried it again later and I didn't get the option of COM1 - because I was connected to the internet  Apparantly the modem was using the port! Live and Learn!
