I have windows 98 and there are 2 USB ports in the back. I cannot hook up the printer. What port do I set the printer to, it is currently only LPT1. There are also 2 COM ports, I tried those but that didn't work. When I tried to print it says printer must be set to USB.

When I when to control panel, system, then device manager, the checkmark beside USB is checked and it shows that a printer is connected.

The other thing I don't understand is I connected the digital camera and it doesnt show up in my computer but it is able to download pictures with the software wizard that came w/ the camera.

    What should I do?

Go to Control Panel>Printers, right click on the printer, left click on Properties, go to the Details tab.

In the drop-down list of ports, click on USB to select it, click OK, close the Control Panel window. See if that fixes things.

It your version of windows 98 second edition or first. I beleive the issue may lie with your windows 98. I would seriously consider upgrading if you are going to be doing work with digi cams printers and photos.

Do you have all your drivers installed correctly?

Win 98 needs drivers installed for everything related to USB. You need the printer drivers installed, the USB drivers, USB 2.0 drivers (if your motherboard supports USB 2.0) and a good set of motherboard/chipset drivers.

If the motherboard happens to be a VIA chipset model, some of the models from around 2000 needed a patch for their USB drivers.

There should be instructions for Win 98 setup in the manual for the printer or check if there are any troubleshooting lists in the manual or maybe FAQs relating to the problem at the printer manufacturer's website.

    Have a look through these:

drecollet - I have merged your two threads - please don't double post the same problem in two forums.

I went to the control panels, printers, and properties, however there is no USB option in the drop down list.

How can I tell if it is the 1st or 2nd version of Win 98?

How do I get the USB drivers? I use USB for my mouse and the digital camera has been able to get the pictures from the camera as long as I use the software that I came with it.

Control Panel -> System (-> General tab), top right, if it is Second Edition it will say so.

If you have a branded computer like a HP, Dell, Sony, IBM, etc, you will need to look up the model at the manufacturer's website. Their Support page should have a "Driver download" section or you may need to find your model from the Support page and then you will find all the information about the computer including links to drivers.

If it is not a branded computer, you will need to know the make and model of the motherboard. An easy way may be to use Everest in my signature, under Motherboard -> Motherboard -> Motherboard Name. If you have any trouble with that, let us know, there are other ways to ID it. Put the make and model number into a Google search along with "drivers ", you may be able to go directly to the motherboard manufacturer's download page, otherwise go to their Support page and look up your model from there.

While you are at the manufacturer's Support website, see if there are any "FAQs" that may relate to USB for your model.

Post back here with the model number if you wish, maybe we can help.

    Something else I thought about.

If you happen to have quite a bit of hardware or the power supply does not have a high rating, you may need to get a self-powered USB hub to run the extra items you are adding to the system.

Here is the Asus download page:
    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Your model is a series "Slot 1 "
Get the download labelled "Intel Chipset Installation Utility ".

From the info you supplied the chipset is an Intel i440BX.

I tried to find the specifications, there is more information outside Asus than in it.
    http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/reviews/889/3/screenshot602
    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/3q99/asus_p3b-f/p3b-f-1.html

Intel chipsets are usually installed relatively easily. It may not be the source of the problem, but I still think that the power supply may struggle with some of the newer USB devices. For that era I would say that a 200 watt PSU would be adequate, P3 workstations I am familiar with (IBM and Compaq) only come with a 90 watt PSU, so they would struggle even running a second HDD. You would need to open the cover of the case and read the information label on the PSU to discover it's rating.

Check in Device Manager that there are no problems related to USB (look under Universal Serial Bus Controllers). Check that there is an Intel labelled "Host Controller" there with the full model number.

Ok problem w/ checking the power supply. Idiot local manufacturing riveted shut the cover.

New intel chipset utility driver installed.

Problem #2, idiot, jack in the box who thinks he knows what he is doing, deleted the freakin printer and now it won't reinstall. Giving me some error.

    What should I do now?
