A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure and their technology such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same secure capabilities but at a much lower cost.

Odds are you don't need VPN capibilities. But it won't hurt anything if you have it;)

If you have the money, go for VPN router but would you use it ?

If you could give us the scenario in which it is to be used, perhaps then we may be able to guide you better.

All I use is nothing more than general home use, web surfing reading stuff
The router is 8 ports and I would be able to do away with my switch.
The router ad says Ethernet VPN Router, 8-Port 10/100 Switch.
It will cost $81.00 on ebay, I've not run across any 8 port router other than that. My present router is4 port (so I added a switch) Linksys (BEFSR41) It is 5 or 6 years old and keeps loosing the signal, and I have to unplug it to reset it sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. So I figure to just replace it

You don't need a VPN router.

A 8 port router would be about half that price. Save your money.
