Diassapearing "Recent File" List in Word 2003

I just (finally!) upgraded from Word 97 to Word 2003 as part of my installation of Office Standard Edition 2003.

Buit for some reason the "recent file" list is gone, and in the options menus, the place where I can enable it is greyed out and unavailable.

Any idea how to fix this?
