Got a customer with XPP SP2 and a dial up connection.

I'm getting such flaky performance (non-connects, drop-outs etc) from her internal PCI modem that I wondered if maybe there's an upgrade for DUN that I don't know about.

Done all the usual things, like shifting the modem to different PCI slots, as well as trying different PCI modems, (in different slots) but nothing seems to work consistently. Like - the connection to her ISP is intermittent; sometimes it goes straight through - other times it hangs, or drops out completely.

The machine is a Compaq Presario 5000 series (5WV230) with a motherboard labelled 'UWAVE'.

Any suggestions would be welcome :)

Have you tried using the pc in a different location?
The problem could be with the phone company and or phone lines within the house.

I've had bad connections (low speeds), "could not connect" at logon, dropouts. When I connected a handset to the line and dialled one digit, I could hear static. I have checked the cables before, but today I took the wall socket off and found the insulation broken on two wires.

I'm looking forward to good connections from now on.

Sorry Steve - I replied to your post a couple of days back but it seems to have fallen into a black hole. What I said was that the pc wasn't at her place, but in my workshop, and my phone connection is pretty reliable.

    Mattman, thanks for your comment.

Anyway - the problem is solved. It turned out to be the hardware. As soon as I installed a brand new modem, the connection improved out of sight.
