A friend has a Windows 7 Home dialog box that we can't close. It sits in the lower right corner of the Desktop and covers the clock and icons - only about 1/3 of it appears. It won't move and right click does nothing. There are no visible controls - close, minimize, etc.

It appears to be a dialog box related to security/backup - she is using Norton 360. On the top line is a gold rectangle with a white triangle inside and an exclamation point inside that. Next to it is a blue circle with an arrow pointing to the right. Then there is a dialog that says "Create Recov" and that's all I can read. The second line reads "In the event of a critical hardware failure" and that's all I can read of that line. One thing I did note is that she has something called Dell Data Safe.

We would like to get rid of the dialog box but can't seem to do anything with it. Should note that there are no other problems that would lead us to think that this is some sort of malware.

You should be able to open Dell Data Safe from the Start menu - Start>All Programs>Dell folder.

Information about what it is and what it does is on this Dell page.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Steve -
No context menus and no other actions take place.

Miz - I was able to open the Dell Data Safe application but I couldn't find anything that would let me change any display characteristics and move the popup/dialog box to uncover the clock and icons. The only thing I can figure out is to disable the DataSafe or perhaps uninstall it and go to another backup program such as Acronis or Ghost. I think the DataSafe only does backups in any event - I don't think it does images.

    Any other thoughts?

Added - I have searched the Dell site but couldn't find anything specific to our problem. Lots of information on the program itself but no help for my problem. I submitted the question but am not holding my breath.

I don't plan to use it so I disabled it in msconfig. Maybe that will fix the dialog box problem.

Click on Start, the on Run. If Run isn't on the Start Menu, the Windows key/R key combination will open it.

    Type msconfig and click OK.

On the Services tab, uncheck "DataSafe," click OK.

When it reboots, you'll get a message about starting selective mode. You do want it to start in selective mode so click the box for "Don't show me this message again," click OK.

    See if that fixes it.

I have found a reference that suggests this:
    see:

Perhaps this same method will work for you also.

    Goddez,

The screen resolution did the trick. However, I didn't have to change the numerical settings. Apparently someone had reset her monitor setting from 100% to 125 or 150% - I assume that is a feature in Windows 7. I put it at 100% and was able to get rid of the dialog box.

Miz - I decided not to disable the DataSafe program. I will learn how to use it on my friend's computer. Probably a good idea because she doesn't use any other backup.

So - thanks to all for your input. This place never ceases to amaze me. I'll mark this one as "Resolved ".
