Hello, I'm having a problem with the new computers at work. I need to be able to dial in to our main office from our sattelite office. (56k modem connection)

At the main office, we have a simple network with 2 computers. We do not have to log in on startup. I need to dial in to the server. I created a user name and password, but Windows seems to default to a password that I don't know and can't change. The people we purchased the computers do not know how to fix this at this time.

Right now, I can dial in, and the server does answer, but seems to not recognize my user name or password, or perhaps does not recognize that someone is trying to dial in.

    Can anyone help?

Sorry, all computers are brand new running Windows XP

I am not getting an error like that, it simply does not connect. It dials and the server answers, but it seems like the server is not recognizing the username and password I set up.

Sorry for the delay in resonding. I was fishing all weekend and came in to a minor disaster at work so been busy.

Since all three PCs are running XP, I assume you are using workgroups rather than Domains. And that you are running a workstation OS on all three since the XP server version isn't written yet.

Any XP posts and it helps to have XP-pro or XP-home since they do lots of things differently.

You will need to be logged in on the PC trying to dial in and will need a username and password on the PC you are dialing to that is identical (including case) to the PC that is dialing in.

    Also are you running firewalls?

If yes to the firewalls, do you have a port open for the dial-up connection to use?

We are running XP pro, without a firewall.

As far as logging in, we do not log in when we start XP at either location, it simply starts without requesting a login.

I did set up a username and password on the computer I am dialing in to, and I am sure I am entering it correctly when I try to dial in.

As far as I can tell, and from everything I've read so far, I've set it up correctly, and it should be working.

For testing and until you get this thing working, I suggest you put passwords on all the accounts and force a login with the password on each PC.

I have a feeling it may cure your dial-in problems.

If it does and if you really don't want the extra couple of seconds required to login, you can then start playing with other variations like setting passwords to blank or something.
