    Hi,
This is yet another one of those 'sometimes' problems that seem to be hard to find and cure.
I have a Cable modem, which means that I'm always on-line. So why, every once in a while, do I get a 'Dial-up' screen pop up?
It isn't always the same site that gives me this message, and I can go for days without even seeing it. Then suddenly, when you're not expecting it, up it pops!!

    Hello,

I posted something similar to this a while back, and this is exactly what happens to me. Sometimes it will actually pop up, when I am ALREADY online. Other times it loads when "a program" requests an internet connection. I have it set to "Never Dial a connection," but it persists in coming up.

    Hiya

I don't know if it may be down to a loose cable, but it may be down to a prgram trying to dial out. Are you using a Firewall? If not, get ZoneAlarm www.zonelabs.com There is a free one. This will tell you of any programs trying to dial out.

Also, did you ever have one os those 'speed your connection' bits of software?

    Regards

    eddie

    Hi again,
Nice to see that I'm not the only one with problems. However, my wife and me are 'networked' and we just use the one cable connection. We use a Linksys Hub, which has a built-in firewall. Neither of us uses a seperate 'firewall' programme as such.
Like me, she too has a Dell computer with Win XP, but she doesn't have the same problems!!

This is the first time I have heard ( read ) that about Firewalls.

Where in the world did you hear that ?

They are a lot safer than having a Trojan attack your system.

Terry - do you have a dial-up modem in your PC at all? Also, is XP original or an upgrade?

Eddie - XP has a firewall as part of the standard load. However, if he is using a Linksys router, firewalls on the individual PCs would just stop his LAN from working right.

Terry - are you sure you have a "Hub "? Major differences between that and the router/switch that is probably more common now for home networks connected to broadband internet service. If you aren't sure, post back the model number of your device. For one thing, a hub cannot have a firewall built in AFAIK. Routers can. Linksys ones do.

Sorry to seem to be picking nits here but there could easily be situations where you ask for help and the answer would be totally different for a hub vs a router vs a router/switch.

    Hi again,
Ooops, yes you're right Newt, it is a Linksys ROUTER and not a Hub as I first thought.

I had a Dell Dimension with ME installed, which I upgraded to XP via Dell. Yes, it does have a modem installed, but never used.

Neither my wife or I use/have a seperate firewall installed, as we were told that the Linksys Router contained a hardware firewall. Some people swear by them, and we pass all the 'ShieldsUp' tests.

    eddie5659 -
No I don't have anything that's supposed to 'speed up my connection'.
