Edward Walker--Probably not. The modem may be technically capable of up to 56K but Government regulations limit it to 53K and then your phone company may impose further limits depending on how fast your neighborhood is growing, how far you are from a "central office" and how many people they are trying to serve without installing new lines.
Is this something new? Did you ever achieve, say, 49K? If yes, the phone company may just have altered your phone line to the minimum needed for telephone purposes.
You can look here for tweaks, but I doubt they will help you get more than 10% improvement, if even that.

    Many thanks for the info
I will try out the suggestions
I only noticed the speed when it poped up on on of the tests I sort of stumbled into by accident so it has proberly been the same all along

Unless you live in a way out of the way area you should get a much better connection. Most all phone company hardware and lines in cities today in the US have already been upgraded to support the max a 56k modem can deliver. You slow is likely due to the lines in your home and not phone company lines, but there couild also be faulty hardware/switches on a telco line in your neighborhood. Call the telco and ask them to do a line test. It's free and they'll do it right then & there with you on the line.

TonyT--I certainly agree that Edward Walker's internal wires could be the problem, especially after a wet spring, but my personal experience was that the phone company had given me a "single pair" connection by splitting a "double pair" when the neighborhood grew. Also I am more than four miles from the nearest "central office" even though I have a city address. There is nothing in it for the phone company to optimize phone lines for internet use, unless they can get you to sign up for DSL.
I never did any better than 26.4K on dial up in a brand new house. About three years or so I switched to cable when it became available in my neighborhood. Not sure DSL is available yet.
