I have dial-up service on my Windows XP computer. I like to decide whether I connect to the internet or not. Every time I turn my computer on a screen immediately pops up stating "Select the service you want to connect to, and then enter your user name and password" and I have to close this sceen each time. I have my internet provider's icon on my desktop and I don't want this annoying screen showing up. How can I stop this screen from showing up? Thank you very much. abm

    Hi, abm. :)

Please go into your Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections tab and check to see whether you have "Never dial a connection" selected for your dial-up account or not. If you have other networking accounts set up, please investigate those as well.

To mickzer: If I select "never dial a connection" will I not be able to connect to the internet when I click my internet provider's icon on my desktop? What is the worst case scenario if I select "never dial a connection ". Thank you. abm

You can always go back and de-select it . As far as I can remember that was the way I had it when I was on dial-up (ie. selected)

I use dial-up and I have " "Never dial a connection" " selected. I think that setting only prevents Windows from automatically dialing or automatically prompting you to dial (depending on other settings for your dial-up). I can still manually connect whenever I wish.

Therefore, I suggest you set "Never dial a connection" for your dial-up and see if that solves your issue. (Please let us know.)

If you have a shortcut for your dial-up on your desktop (as I have), you can right-click on the shortcut and select "Connect" to manually initiate a dial-up connection.

When you want to disconnect, you can right-click on the active networking icon in your system try (by the clock) and select "Disconnect ".

If you want assistance with copying a shortcut for your dial-up to your desktop, please let us know and we'll assist. :)

I think with that setting ( "Never dial a connection" selected),the "Connect" box comes up automattically whenever you double-click your default browser or your default e-mail client.I also think you can select "Show connection status in taskbar" or words to that effect.

To Mailman: SUCCESS. Before I turned off my computer last night I selected "Never dial a connection ". This morning I turned on my computer and worked on my word processor for two hours before I clicked on my internet provider's icon on my taskbar (to get connected to the internet) and that nasty screen did not show up. So far so good. I will let you know if that screen shows up again. Thanks for your help. abm
