I am really new to this stuff so please bare with me.

I did a clean install from win 95 to win98 and I cannot get dial up to work.
    I get an error

error 630 computer is not receiving a respone from the modem.

What modem?? I didn't get one when I subscribed. All I have is the plug at the back of my computer. could I be missing drivers??

PS.. Told you I was really green with this.

So you formatted the hard drive and installed Win 98?

Check in the device manager for any yellow marks against the devices. If you find one then you will need to reinstall the driver for the modem, probably. I would uninstall the modem first and then reboot and let win 98 redetect the modem and install the drivers when prompted.

No one was ever born an expert!

If you have been connected to the internet on Win 95 then you have an internal modem which was fitted to the PC when you acquired it - the socket on the back of your PC into which you plug your phone line is the rear panel of the modem.

The likely hood is that you do not have the modem drivers installed. I wonder if you have a modem installation CD or a CD which accompanied the PC with a set of drivers on it.

Make a check in Device Manager and see if 98 is recognising the presence of a modem and, if it does, is the entry flagged with an '!' mark and what comments are on the General tab (right click on the modem > Properties)? If no modem is shown look to see if there is an Unknown Device entry.

If you don't have drivers and don't know the make/model of the modem look in Modems in Control Panel and see if any details are there. I don't have a 98 m/c up and running right now and can;t check on what you might see.

I was not connected in WIN95- the ISP told me I had to upgrade to win98.

This is an old aptiva someone gave my kids. I found instructions on how to do a clean install and it worked just fine.. except for a few yellow flags.

I don't have any disk, except for one that is labelled recovery. I will check to see if any drivers exist on it. Would it be better if I went and purchased a new modem plug for the computer???

From what you are saying I am not convinced that there is a modem fitted to that Aptiva.

Is a modem shown in Device Manager?

Is a Modem shown under Modems in Control Panel?

What plug - or more correctly - socket?

Look on the back of the PC you are using to connect to the internet - the phone line - assuming you are on dial up - connects to a socket on the rear of the PC - is there a similar socket on the back of the Aptiva?, unless you have an external modem in which case it may be connected to a USB port or a COM port, depending on type.

I think you need a bit of 'hands on' advice - do you have a knowledgeable friend?

There is a phone line socket at the back of the pc. I assumed this was for dial up service.

I am taking your advice and will look for someone who knows alot more than me.

I thought since the error message was looking for a modem, that the socket at the back of the pc was not for the phone line. It is the exact size to host a phone line.

    :) Thanks.

In that case it would appear that a modem is fitted - it is probably lacking the necessary drivers.
