Dial-up & DSL on same PC?

I have a XP computer downstairs that uses dial-up. The Vista one upstairs is on DSL.

I was going to try doing wireless but then thought I'd try something else first.

I bought a Cat5 cable and thought I could disconnect the cable from the modem upstairs, plug the Cat5 into the modem and then into the Network port on the XP downstairs.

Well, that turned into a mess because previously the XP had been upstairs and on DSL. But I guess when I moved it downstairs and used dial-up I must have deleted the DSL settings. Don't remember doing that but I found no settings for ATT&T.

After all of this rhetoric my question is this. Can you have two different methods of connecting to the Internet on the PC at one time?

I use Thunderbird and Firefox but when I tried to duplicate the settings from the one upstairs to the one downstairs I got some sort of a message about having to be an advanced user, which I'm NOT if you want to do what I was trying to do.

I would appreciate any help or thoughts on this.

    Thanks.

Yes you can, but you can only use one connection at a time. Either dial-up, or DSL. If your dial-up is also with AT&T, then give them a call, or use their "Chat" for help on setting up both connections to the Internet. I have no clue how this is done on Vista.

Yes you can have 2 connections on computer at the same time, but you can use only one at a time. My desktop XP Pro only has a LAN (RJ-45) port or connection. It does not have a modem for dial -up. But XP network connections has always taken care of connecting to the Internet through Verizon's Westell Modem and now I have a Linsys Router so our Vista laptop could go wireless but connection manager connected to that as well.

Vitsa just automatically connects to available service whatever it may be, but I never have had phone line hooked up to when I had a wireless connection or LAN connection.

A old computer I have has a LAN Port for DSL and a Modem for Dial-Up the use different cables the same with my laptop.

Go to your Control Panel> Network Connections> Create a new connection, see if that will connect to AT&T. Thats how I connected to Verizon DSL.

I just finished attempting to set up the DSL connection on the XP computer.

I thought all I had to do was connect the cable to the Network card downstairs and the other end into the DSL modem. But think I over simplified the procedure.

I tried to set up a broadband connection. Right?

I kind of looked like I might have succeeded but nope!! I did see something about WAN. Shouldn't it say LAN?

    Guess it's not that simple.

    Thanks.

Did you try using Network Connection Manager even on my old Windows 98 computer switching between
dial - up and the DSL never changed or lost anything. They hooked up to different ports and used a different cable. Go to your device manager look for network adapters, whatever your network card is should be listed there.

Yes, my network card is listed.

I'm just wondering if I need to install some software from AT&T.

I think I'll try calling them and beg for some help. <G>

Thanks. I may have to go back to the thinking about wireless.

What happened when you used Network Connections ?
I show a Local Area Connection or LAN, if you right click and check properties, it will show you what items its running. Down at the bottom of properties box check, show icon in notifications when connected. You may be connected already and a firewall or some other security setting is blocking you from accessing Internet.

Also check device manager, right click on what ever your network card is listed as and then click properties, see if its working properly.

You may have already done all this, I don't know. Also whatever kind of Modem or router you use to connect to AT&T may be blocking you.

And If you go to start>settings> network connection, you should see something there. You could even have a bad cable or connection socket I have had that to happen to me. I hope some of this might help. My problems were usually a bad socket or connection plug check them before yiu give up.

All you have to do is:

    1. disconnect the power from the modem.
    2. connect the cat5 from modem to xp comp.
    3. power up the modem.

The modem associates with the MAC Address of the network adapter on the computer it is connected to. Each network adapter has a unique MAC address, thus you must power off-power on modem when changing computers. Best to get a router and share the connection.

    Tony,

I had already done all of that and it didn't work. (I remember this from an AT&T tech support previously)

After trying everything else and deciding I'd have to go wireless I made one last ditch effort and called ATT&T. Unbelievable!! The young lady actually was willing to help and after trying a couple of things that didn't work, she hit on the problem.

Next thing I knew, it was up and running. Don't know if you all want to know but will tell you what she had me do.

ControlPanel-NetworkConnections Then under LAN, right click and select Properties-Internet Protocol(TCP/IP Properties. Then click on both boxes, indicating--- Obtain and IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. That did it.

I hope you can understand my above info. I'm on a Vista PC and the settings are a little different from the XP.

Thanks for all the help from everyone. Now I can hold off on the wireless for a while longer.
