All-in-all things are going quite well. In fact much better than expected. But just like the good old 98SE it does ( has twice ) come up with the safe mode choice.

    :) HHMMMMM !!! I wonder show caused that ? :)

Being the Try it and see kind of guy I am I have been playing with DHCP Client.

If I go to services and stop it any thing that is online shuts down I lose all my online, AVG and Kerio and Extenshun. An IE start results in Page can't be displayed. ( I wonder why ):)

If I restart DHCP they all come back but with a driver error in AVG Control. A windows restart fixes it.

If I set it to manual nothing changes. Right then anyway. on a restart yes.

Is this something that may have carried over from 98SE ?

Are there changes that I can I make ?

Or is it something that is needed due to the way my system(s) is (are) setup ?

Or should I go by my own thoughts ? Them being " It is working so leave well enough alone. ?

    Bottom line.

This is not a problem. Just something new and not understood by me yet.

HUH OH !! I have just been reminded that I got ot play Doctor and give my Wife and myself B12 shots. ( if not done will be forgotton )

BB set it to manual. That way it will start only if needed. To be sure reboot after changing.

You should not need it unless you have something else installed that requires it! Same for DNS client.

But keep an eye to see if it starts.

Additionally to watch this keep an eye on the event logs.

TIP about how to use the event logs.

to see a clean event log and see what is happening at shutdown and startup clear the logs and immediately shutdown, then boot back up and immediately recheck the logs. The entries now will only have the shutdown and bootup entries.

or clear them then immediately perform a function or start a program and immediately look at the logs to see if errors.

    Hi Mike.

At this time I think the better choice for me is to leave it on Auto. As it is needed at bootup cause I am on Cable Internet.

As to the Event log and clearing it etc.

I have beaten you to it. I clear it and restart before making the next change.

When messing with DHCP I was getting and error involving " User env " ( I think that was it ) in Applications.

I just looked and have had NO ERRORS for at least two hours. Even the DCOM error seems to have left. And I have been testing programs that I have not tried since installing XP Pro.

I do have to admit that by XP going in over top of 98SE so well and with the help from members here, that the transition from SE to XP has gone very well.

And if the one ANCIENT DOS game is the only one that does not work properly I do not think I should feel bad or complain as that was not unexpected.

I have run Monster Truck, Nascar Racing and they are Fabulus.

So. XP Pro may have earned its keep after all. But I still bot 20 days to decide.

BB - re your ancient DOS game

If you know or can find out exactly which environmental variables it wants and any strange things it did to your config.sys/autoexec.bat files on the other system to allow itself to run, you may be able to get it to work.

Build config.sys and autoexec.bat files to suit the game. Place them in the game folder. Create a shortcut to the game and then tweak the shortcut PIF to look for those files in the game folder.

About the only time this won't work is with a game that demands a lower video quality than you have. Otherwise when you start the game, it will build an environment that suits it and run in that environment.

Right now XP is taking a much needed Rest ( from me ) :)

I am redoing the new HD and setting it up for dual booting.

I have the old 98SE HD in here right now.

    I also got a surprise this AM. I put the XP CD in. Shut down the setup, Rebooted and all that came up on the screen was;

" Repair existing installation " or words to that effect. So I just let go. Better to find out some of these things before I activate it.

Repair it did. I had to re-install 20 updates. Plus it repaired bad audio. Audio problem I believe was my fault. I think I got wrong drivers.

But after the repair I had no A: drive ( Floppy ) and only one CDROM.
