Resolved Device Manager unpopulated

    I cannot get the computer to recognise devices I plug in to USB ports.

    The Device Manager window is completely empty.

    Sometimes a device is recognised by the computer (it beeps at me) and it appears in Start>Computer, but not always.

    It is probably something to do with the Plug and Play module which says it is "started" but the buttons to stop it etc. are greyed out.

    I encountered this problem a while ago and discovered an article posted at a website called "helpdeskgeek.com ". It's listed under "/windows-xp-tips/" . I downloaded it in October 2010. If you can't find it, send me a PM and I'll scan it and send it to you.
