I am trying to install a Z-Com XI-300 wireless pcmcia card in Windows 98. I have re-formatted and am running on a fresh install of Windows. I have downloaded the most up-to-date drivers from the manufacturers site (and tried other drivers from other sites as well). The card is recognized by the OS when I plug it in and the "Add New Hardware Wizard" starts up. The problem is that the OS wont accept any of the device drivers I throw at it. I am 100% sure that I have the correct driver (Ive installed this card before on this machine with the same files). I browse right down to the actual .inf file and still get the "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device" screen. I searched the .inf file and noted a reference to IRQ 4. IRQ 4 is currently availible on my system. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michael29,

    Try this:
Copy the .inf file to the folder C:\Windows\Inf
Right-click on the file and select Install.
When Add New Hardware looks for the file uncheck all the boxes for the drives to search. This will make it search the Windows folder. (Hope I remembered it right, you may have to copy associated files to C:\Windows\System).

    ______________

I would expect new hardware like that to have "setup" program associated with it. Any .exe files in the downloads?

I copied the .inf file to the inf folder of the Windows directory. I then tried right clicking on the file and choosing to Install. Nothing noticable happened. I then tried the same within the System folder of the Windows directory with the same result. I have browsed to the files in both locations with the Add New Hardware wizard and Ive also tried unchecking all of the boxes for the drives to check. Ive searched and I cant find any .exe installs for this hardware... only the driver files themselves are availible. Thanks for trying to help. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I think if the install worked, then when you get to see the make and model listed in the Add New Hardware list of drivers (it builds a database which should now list the manufacturer and model). I hoped it would automatically associate the driver information with the hardware, but apparently not. See if you can find your card in the listed drivers now

The other question is if you have used "Have Disk "? I think this allows Windows to install drivers it is not familiar with. Use "Have Disk" to browse to the folder containing the drivers/.inf file.

If still no success then post the website of the drivers and I will download and check if there may be some useful information.

In the meantime I hope someone arrives with the answer.

After reading your post I checked the "Add New Hardware" list and noticed the network card listed as an option under the network adapter. Thanks alot mattman. I would have never figured it out without your help. Let me know if you ever have any coding problems!:D
