Because almost all PCs have a "C:" drive, most installation programs are coded to default to "C:\Program Files\whatever ". However, the vast majority of them will allow you change this at the beginning of the installation routine. Simply hit the [Home] key and replace the "C" with a "D" (or some other valid drive letter).

Be aware that you cannot copy existing installed programs from C:\Program Files to, say, D:\Program Files. Many of the program's files are installed within Windows and reference C:\Program Files\

You must first uninstall the program through Add/Remove Programs, reboot advised and then reinstall the program to D:\Program Files if it permits this.

The default installtation path is in the registry. Download and run the file on line 82, right side. Change Program File Directory

When you run the file a window will open. Simply type the path you want to be the default and click ok.

You're right but, I've had mine changed for a long time and I can't remember the last time I tried to install something that didn't default to the specified folder. It's taken care of the vast majority of them for me.

The link given by Zander is good.

Scroll down on that page to Line 82, right hand column .....

    Change Program File Directory

    Click on Change

In the dialogue box which opens click on Open, in the next dialogue box click on Run and you will see the dialogue box shown below - fill in the new location for Program files > OK

When selecting 'Save as' simply navigate to the location that you want to save the file in.

The Save As dialogue box generally defaults to either the folder from which you opened the document or whatever or to the last saved location.

For Office documents you can set the default file location for Save as ....

In Word >Tools > Options > File Locations and edit the location for Documents.

In Excel > Tools > Options > General > Default file Locations

    and so on.

Other programs may/may not have this facility.
