    Hi all:
This AM when I started my pc, the desktop showed in the lower right the windows version on screen. eg Windows 98.4.10.2222
I can't seem to remove this & it bugs me! I removed it about a year ago, via the system restore method. However...when I restarted my pc in ms-dos mode, then typed system/restore this am, all I got was bad command?? I know my memory is getting bad, so am asking if I'm doing the restore wrong?? Thanks, in advance for any answers. I'd like to be able to remove W98 typing, from screen & do a restore.. George.

Hi again: I suddenly recalled the correct command, scanreg, not system. Thanks for the use of the forum to ask for help, I'm sure I'll need it some time in the future. It allowed me to study what I wrote & come up with my mistake. :D George.

gruss--I understand that you have now fixed the problem. Good!! :)
Nothing wrong with running scanreg /restore , though it really is overkill since you are restoring the Registry to an earlier date and may now need to reinstall any programs/updates, etc installed after that date. (That would include any Windows Updates and Antivirus virus definitions, etc.)

It also is possible to get rid of the Windows version notice, by using TweakUI (for Win98)

I cannot remember just where the setting is but it usually is pretty easy to find things in TweakUI for Win98.

That is true. But can also be pretty much avoided.

Once updates, added/removed software is done and all semms to be OK then go to the C:\Windows\sysbkup folder and DELETE all RB00X.cab files and restart Windows and it will make a new up to date one.

This will help keep it up to date.

I do this with both 98SE and XP Pro. Any time I make changes ALL old RB00X.cab file are deleted and SR in XP shut down and restarted.

There absolutley not reason for keeping out of date backups. It is way too easy to keep them up to date.

In either OS if we make changes today the we want permanent then the old files are out of date and useless. Even maybe dangerous.

    In other words.

We keep Windows and other software up to date.

Why not keep certain backups up to date to match ?

OOPS! Guess I'll remove my post. I see Jim mentioned TweakUI in a previous post. Gotta do a better job of reading all the posts in the thread. :)

    Windows Version Removal

Hi Jim: Thanks for the answer. I found the tweakui settings tab (general) for removal box. Thanks. I only restored to the night before, nothing would be lost in doing it that way. Thanks again, George. I've used t/ui for about 7 years now & never even saw the version settings in it!! :D

    RB00x Cab Files

    Hi Billybob:
I've done this before, but now I'm even seeing an rbbad cab file listed in there, should it be tossed?? It's from a year ago! I've just simply never noticed it before. Guess that shows you how often I've used scan/rest, & updated it. George. :D

Yes it can be discarded. It was made when Windows itself found what it thought was a registry error and made changes. And makes that file.

I myself found one on my 98 machine a couple of days ago.
