When I start XP Media Center I get "Loading personal settings" then I get the desktop image and that's it. No icons and no taskbar. There is no response from any key combination other than CTRL | Alt | Delete.

Pressing CTRL | Alt | Delete starts task manager where I can Run explorer.exe. This brings up all icons, taskbar and full functionality. On restart the screen is blank once again.

I have already made sure that explorer.exe is in the Shell at HKLM > Software > Microsoft > WindowsNT > Current Version > WinLogon

    Any help appreciated, thanks

Were you messing around with "themes" from 3rd party companys before this error started?

If it is this PC I suggest the 'nuke & pave' method:

Delete the partitions, re-format & start from scratch!

Yes it is... I tend to agree and I think crunchie is about to point me in that direction
