I have had it happen several times that i lose the desktop when using Task Manager to close a program that's not responding. How do i get my desktop back without shutting down the computer? :D
I still have the desktop background showing though.
Windows XP Pro SP3, 4G ram, DuoCore 2.66G cpu, GTS430 video card with 8600 GTS as PhysX card, 500G HDD, DVD and BluRay drives.

    Try this:
    1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] to bring up the Windows Task Manager.

    2. Click File > New task (Run ...)

    3. In the "Open:" box, type in:
      explorer
and press [Enter], (or click OK).

    Disappearing desktop

Thanks, but that didn't bring back the desktop itself. :) It did however bring up the individual programs attached to the run command. So that was interesting.
I saw quite a while back a keystroke combo that brought desktop back into view when it disappeared. Can't for the life of me remember how to do it.

Personally I'd be asking why I needed to use end task so often?

Is this the same program or happens with different programs. (end task is an extreme measure which shouldn't be used lightly)

It happens with different programs. They just freeze up( not often). Then when i use Task Manager to end them i lose the desktop sometimes. Its annoying. OS came on machine when i got it in 11/2007. This isn't the original HDD tho as the old one was showing signs of possible crash to come, due to age i guess. Explorer is particularly bad about freezing up, so i stay away from it. I still remember about key combo giving desktop back if it disappeared. I'll check at Microsoft and see if they have it there somewhere.

WinLogo+D is the combination you're looking for but I doubt it'd help with this.
