I have three computers, all with Windows XP Home, Sp.3 The desktops are set up the same, however on one the characters under the desktop icons have a rectangular dark blue background. This helps the readability a great deal, but I have not been able to set up the other two in the same way. How can I do this?

Possibly related is that in Display Properties-Themes, the one with the dark blue character backgrounds lists Windows XP (Modified), My Current Theme, Windows XP, Windows Classic, More Themes Online and Browse as the choices. The others have My Current Theme, Windows XP, Windows Classic, More Themes Online and Browse as the choices. If I depart from the Windows XP (Modified) theme and then try to get back it is not available, but the dark blue backgrounds remain. What happened to Windows XP (Modified)?

You might have to find an expert in icon backgrounds . There are many, many settings in Desktop settings combined with Themes, background colours, etc.

If you change from any default settings, it becomes a "Modified Theme ".

If you modify background colours, it is retained as the "outline" for the icons.

Matt, I've noticed that if you change the screen background to say a photo you have in your Picture Folder, it brings up 'Modified Theme' in the Themes drop down box.
It shows on my comps where I have used a photo, but is not in the Themes Drop down on a normal 'Bliss' background.
Still don't know the answer to the Blue outline of the Icons. Neil.

OK. Sorry 'bout that. I followed Aire's suggestion and went to http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/troub-04.html. After correcting the "drop shadows for icon labels" and "smooth edges of screen fonts" entries, I got the backgrounds for the icon text that I wanted. It's amazing how tweaks like this can drive one nuts when reinstalling a system that is a couple of years old!
