My OS is WIN98 and I have installed IconCache as well as a Layout Programme so I am able to restore my Desktop icon layout, but it is annoying having to it after every start.

I have deleted the Windows file: shelliconcache but it did not solve the problem, which suddenly started when I happened to have some freezing problems of the system recently.

I may also add that when I right click on desktop there is no marking on alphabetical order or any of the other markings.

Icon Cache Size is set at 4096. When I change size, my icons are placed in alphabetical order on desktop. Could it be the Icon Cache file that is corrupt? Can it be deleted or just reinstalled over the present file. If it has to be deleted, where do I find the file?

Hope somebody out there will be able to help.

    Best regards

    Hi Mariola.
I do not think your problem has anything to do with Windows
icon cache. It's just that Windows can be very forgetful.
With drag and drop, arrange your desktop icons as you want them.
Right click on the desktop , hold down the Shift key and click
"line up icons" so that they are nicely aligned.
Using the start button, reboot the PC BUT hold down the Shift key
before you select reboot and then click "OK "
This sometimes reminds Windows to save the desktop settings correctly.
    regards

    Hi merlin

I am not  anymore but :)

Thanks for the advise. It worked.

I may just add that I noticed when aligning the icons that the text below 2 of them was placed at the right edge of the screen and almost disappeared when aligning the icons. Maybe this was causing my problem.

Thanks a lot for prompt help.

    Regards
