A friend was having problems with runtime errors popping up constantly, along with those annoying pop-ups that say "Your computer may be infected with.... ", and also his desktop icons and taskbar just suddenly disappear. I had him run Spybot Search & Destroy and also Ad-Aware SE Personal and fix everything it found, but he's still having the same problems.

Here is his HijackThis log file:

First of all, no firewall (unless Windows firewall is used), nor antivirus program seems to be running.
This is where we have to start.

Thank you. I will find out if he uses the Windows firewall. I know he doesn't have any antivirus programs. Is there one you would recommend?

Download, and install free AVG antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/
After installation, update it, and run full scan.

    When you done...

    1. Run free online scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
The Housecall log is saved to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\.housecall\log\
    Post HouseCall log.

    2. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    Print these instructions out.
