Here I am again with a minor problem. I put a shortcut to my C partition, and my D partition and my DVD E drive, and my CDRW F drive on my Desktop. I can right click, properties and change the icon on the C and D partitions. When I try this on my DVD it tells me that "The name 'E:\' specified in the target box is not valid. Make sure the file name and path are correct ". It does the same with my CDRW, except "F:\ ". I must click OK, then cancel out. OK, OK does not work. When I click on my DVD or CDRW icon I open these drives, so why does it not see the drive letters. I like my partitions different, and would also like my DVD, and CDRW icons different. Makes them easier to see. Again this is not fatal, but aggravating. Somewhere there must be a simple way to do this.

I had similar problems a while back on XP. Was frustrating and I can't remember why it eventually corrected. Maybe something was deleted with the registry cleaners I use. Although I doubt it, as it hasn't occurred recently.

What I did was delete both the shortcuts and recreate shortcuts from my computer. Can't remember if I had to reboot before recreating the shortcuts, but it required a bit of messing around till they both worked correctly and have been stable ever since. (a few months).

I remember I may have had to have discs in the drives as well. Or maybe I didn't? It sounds a bit weird, but one of the combinations I tried worked, and haven't had problems since.

Refreshing the desktop Icons (F5) might be advantageous at some stage as well?

Thanks, Paul for your come back. I can use the shortcuts, but I can not change the icons. I tried the things you posted, and I still can not change the icons. Maybe you could right click one of these shortcuts, and click Properties, and then click OK. Then post back with what happened.

There's an easy solution to your problem. First, change each icon in Windows Explorer by opening the drive's properties sheet, selecting the Customize tab, then the Change Icon button.

When you've done that, drill down to the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop folder in the left pane of WE while keeping My Computer open in the right pane, right-click on your new drive icons, drag them to the Desktop folder and select Create Shortcuts Here from the context menu.

Your shortcuts with the new icons should be immediately available on your Desktop.

    Wahlroot,
I find no problem changing the icon IF there is a cd in the drive. Without that, it acts as you have described. :)

My shortcuts were created from the "My Computer" screen but I have tried it by manually creating them and it's the same game.

OK Thanks to all your help, I do believe I have got it.
To make a shortcut to the drives or make changes in Properties, I had to have a CD with something on it in the drive. An empty CD did not work. Take out the CD, and it did not work, put it back and it did. You did it again! Thanks!

Thanks for telling us. Some of these cures are part voodoo, I swear! It just makes a body wonder what all does affect any given process of these one-eyed monsters.
