I recently did a Windows XP update and I seem to have received a file on my desktop that I don't want.

There is no name to the file on the desktop except something that looks like a backwards and upside down S.

When I delete the file from my desktop it adds it to the recycle bin. When I try and delete it from the recycle bin, it says file name Dc21 cannot be deleted because it is being used by another person or application.

The weird thing is that if I restore the file to my desktop and then go through the deletion process again (delete from the desktop then from the recycle bin) the name of the file changes. The number advances by one. So now the file name is Dc24.

Any suggestions or help to fix this problem?

If the name of the file is this - ~ - (called a tilde), then it's probably a misplaced backup of your address book. Outlook Express makes a backup of the address book every time it's opened but due to the bug in the update, the backup file gets saved to the desktop instead of the folder where it belongs. I haven't encountered problems with deleting it before, though.

It might be that you're having problems deleting it - which is usually what is done with it on computers suffering this particular problem - because you have your email software running. If that's the case, close your email software and try deleting it again.

I was under the impression that glitch had been fixed in a more recent update but perhaps not.

Hi jpastl - Welcome to the Board :)

If the file you refer to appears on the desktop labelled '~' it is a backup of your Address Book. There is a bug in Outlook Express - yet to be fixed, which creates this backup to the desktop each time you make an addition to the Address Book.

MS suggest renaming the file - most delete it, but I would think that OE must be closed first to avoid the 'in use' message. I am not sure why it turns up as Dc21, etc in the Recycle Bin.
