Win 98SE:When I boot up to "Desktop" I get an error message titled "Hpfsched ": "Cannot find the file 'hpfsched'(or one oits components). Make sure the path and the names are correct and that all required libraries are available "(o.k.)
when checked , get a second titled "Desktop ": "could not locate "hpfsched specified in the Win.ini file" etc. When checked the message disappears. --I found the file "hpfsched, exe" by file search in C:\windows. but nothing in
Win.ini. Where do I look next?

Do you have an HP Deskjet printer - description of hpfsched here

If so I suggest you uninstall the printer and software and reinstall.

Perhaps the line is referenced in the registry and should be removed from there.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpu01813&dlc=en&lang=en

If you choose to do this, please backup the registry or export the hkey before modifying or deleting the value. If you do not know how to do so, ask and instructions can be given.

----The answer may be as simple as the above suggestion but--------------

Personal Warning: In the following, I am risking information overload or providing more questions/steps then may be needed to solve this problem! (Sorry, in an effort to be thorough, I tend to do this^). Perhaps this section of my thread should be entilted, "How to make a mountain out of a molehill ".......:)

If the registry suggestion does not pan out see the following:
Have you removed or uninstalled the printer? Is this file possibly corrupt? Any printer problems? Is this file possibly referenced and found in the "Task Scheduler" (mstask.exe) via the control panel? Is the runline found in msconfig.exe, opened by typing the msconfig on the startmenu runline and clicking on the "startup tab "?

I may be over-thinking this and am looking for trouble where none exists (again, I tend to do this) but giving this a bit more thought and realizing that you did find and do have hpfsched.exe in c:\windows folder but do not have the run line in win.ini. <-This is the expected locations and defaults. Knowing windows is still trying to run this, but can't, may be needed to be "reguarded as suspicious ". Trojan or Virus may be afoot. I'm not saying it is. Further, I suspect it most probably is not but keep this in the back of your mind. Have you On-line scanned recently? Links can be found in the security forum. They are found in the stickies pinned to the top of the forum room.

There should be listings in Add/remove programs for the HP software, you can remove them there. If it is not there, I would reinstall/rerun the HP drivers program. If you no longer use the HP printer, uninstall it in Add/remove programs rather than deleting it from the Printers folder.

Your most welcome and I'm glad this helped. Thank you, back at ya', for updating your post with the final result.

    For Archives:
I will assume, since you had checked your win.ini previously, that this took the removal of the run value in the registry, as per the hp article directions.
