Desktop display corrupted when using Search (for files/folders)

When searching for a file, after the search facility has been running for alittle while, the desktop display loses various items, particularly names under icons. The normally blue background (I have no theme selected) will sometimes go white too.

Additionally, Search will, after displaying a list of items, repeat the scan and duplicate what it finds.

I have run sfc /scannow but that makes no difference.

What can be causing this strange behaviour?

I'll see if I can attach a couple of screenshots ... ah, yes.

Hi Syncopator. Does the display get corrupted only when you perform a windows search or does it happen after the computer has been running for a while? Is your video card driver up to date? Do you have Windows Search 4.0 installed?

If you don't have Windows Search 4.0 installed then I would suggest downloading that from here, Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP. Reboot the computer after the update is installed and see if that makes any difference.

If upgrading to Windows Search 4.0 does not work then try Performing a clean boot in indows XP .

Thank you Evan for the suggestions.

The corruption appears only when running a search.

The video card driver is up to date.

I don't know what version 4.0 of Windows Search was installed (I don't know how to find out), so I downloaded it anyway.

There was no difference after a reboot.

I have been through the clean boot instructions but unfortunately I still see the corruptiuon when using Search.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and performing a search there?

What happens when you change the desktop theme back to the default Windows XP theme? Does that make any difference?

Sounds like either a graphics problem, or a resource problem.

I shall report further in a while. I have other things to do, many of which are more pressing.

    Thank you Evan.

Doing a search after booting into Safe mode does not cause the problem.

There isn't a default Windows theme, I've deleted them. I did change the desktop background though. I normally have none selected (a plain blue screen). I selected the green hill thing. Made no difference - I still get the display corruption.

Arie, do you have any suggestions where and what to look for insofar as graphics or resource problems are concerned?
    And what are "resources" anyway?

I know that you said your video driver is up to date. You are running the Nvidia GeForce 6200 right? I assume you downloaded the latest driver version from Nvidia's website correct? Here is the download link for the latest driver if you haven't downloaded it yet, GeForce R304 Driver.

What security programs do you have installed? I saw in your first screenshot that you have Microsoft Security Essentials and what looks like CA Antivirus. You should only have one Antivirus program running in the background as having more than one can cause your computer to slow down.

    Correct.

Incorrect. I used Driver Genius. Driver date is 23/09/2012 (sic), and driver version is 6.14.13.681

I had a look on that link. It doesn't give either a date or a version. How do you/we know that it is more recent than the one installed?

MSE is installed and enabled. Malwarebytes and SUPERAntispywre Professional are both installed but disabled; I run them once in a while. (I know the caveats about running more than one.)

    Arie. Ok, thank you.

I've had no apparent graphics problems other than the one which is the subject of this thread.

The machine has a 160.03 GB hard drive, 115.5 GB of which is free. and there's 1.536 GB of r.a.m.

The driver that I linked you to is dated from October 9, 2012 which is more recent than the one you have installed. Its not a good idea to use 3rd party programs to update your drivers as they sometimes can be incorrect with identifying the correct ones to update. Its always better to visit the manufacturers website to download drivers.

Go ahead and install that version of the Nvidia driver that I linked to.

Ok, I did that a few minutes ago. I'm afraid that there's no change.

There's one thing I didn't mention. Sometimes, if I move the mouse cursor around the screen, missing text beneath icons reappears.

When the screen corruption is worse, moving the cursor just changes the corruption.

They are one and the same. Driver Genius reports version 6.14.13.681, NVidia lists 306.81. The date is misleading most of the time.

That doesn't tell us a whole lot... Have a look with Process Explorer. Run your search & see where the bottleneck lies.

I have run Process Explorer three times. Once before I tried a search, once while searching but before display corruption started, and the third time after corruption started.

Needless to say, the results don't mean anything to me, but I shall attach the txt files of them.

Neither do they to me

I'd just look at the System information.

    • (CPU) Handles, threads and processes
    • (Memory) Available

I have received a private message from PeteC asking me to continue or conclude this thread.

Since my computer still has the problem I would like to keep the thread open. Perhaps somebody can eventually help me solve it.

By the way, Process Explorer displays information which means absolutely nothing to me.

Oh, and another thing... I just remembered your incredible mess of a Desktop

Try creating a new user profile and run a search from there. See if that fixes it...
