I have a gateway computer from around 1998,running windows 98se.I put system in scan disk mode first before I start defrag mode. Computer will not run completely thru in Thorough scan mode.Alert comes up that scan has tried to rerun several times but cannot complete. So I try to go from there into degrag.computer defrags to about 52%,and stalls.Computer clicks(sound pattern stays the same) and legend shows that the scan bar is not moving. If I stop defrag mode an alert comes up that the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.(Explorer caused a general protection fault in module krnl386.exe at 0001:00001c4c.Where and what is the problem and what must or can I do to correct it? computer is slow. Thank you for your help!

    G'DAy "ufrunga ",

This could be a memory module problem or a HDD problem.

If you have a 98se boot floppy disk, boot with it and run " scandisk C: " This will fix any file system errors if the HDD is still in good condition.

    Then reboot and try again.

If it still fails you may need to run a HardDisk surface fix utility like "HDD Regenerator" v1.51 will do, that you can run from a boot floppy - takes all night and half a day but it will in most instances fix any cluster / sector errors on the HDD.

    Then re-boot and try again.

By the sounds of it you are using the default Windows 98 Defrag utility which by default cannot optimize you HDD 100% in that it cannot optimize the Win98 system files, paging file or the defrag.exe program itself - but it's better than nothing!

If you know how, re-seat all cables and memory modules on the Motherboard.
