Not being rude or trying to anger you but this question has been asked and answered many times and can be found in "archives ". Have you tried to find the references and fixes these.

    Grrrrrrrr............

Just use SpywareDr's link below for googles list of fixes. I can't seem to work out he kinks for my link but they are the same.

Thank you spywareDr. Don't know what I am doing wrong for my own link.

I've trolled the archives but haven't realy found an answer there apart from downloading some software that needs to be running all the tiime. I don't understand why it's been ok for four or five years and then last week it rearranges my Icons into alphabetical order each time I boot up.

please don't over look SpywareDr's link up above. This is a filtered list form Google focusing on your problem.

Just a few reasons why this new nuisance may happen now....
recently updated graphics drivers, changed or customized resolution or desktop icon size, have added a program that uses a different resolution than the one you use? Any of these will cause vista to be fussy. This, as I recall is a problem that will rear up its ugly head for a number of reasons. It has always been more easily solved by the a method such as below. Unless your into making a new user profile.

A reg file that adds save and restore desktop icons :

Looking at the forums this seems to be a common problem but I haven't found an answer that works for me. I downloaded disable-windows-vista-desktop-autoarrange and have run it twice but the icons still auto arrange.

Open regedit, and check if you have HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer \ NoSaveSettings - if you have that key, what is the value?

Another thing to try: create a new user account and test if things work there.

I created a new user account and the icons stay put on reboot but of course I have not got most of the icons I use and it's not system administrator.

You can remedy both of those items;)

Sounds like the original profile is partially corrupt...which happens from time to time.

Log in with the original account that I'm guessing is an admin account....

Right click on My Computer->Manage->Local Users and Groups->USER - double click on the New User->Member Of-> "ADD" it to the administrator group

Then in Win Explorer->USERS folder....Look in the original/Admin's DESKTOP folder and copy all of the shortcuts to the New Users Desktop Folder.

Steve, I right click on Computer ( I don't have My Computer) then Manage but I don't see Local users and Groups. If I put Local Users and Groups into Help it seems to say that you can't do this if your running Vista Home Basic, which I am.

Can't say I've ever seen the basic version...

Back to your original issue - approx how many icons do you have on the desktop with the original user? If it's more then 20 - you might want to consider creating some folders and move the icons there. You'd have less getting moved around.
