Hi I've picked up an SSD for my old dell optiplex 745 and some extra memory.

The bios chip does support AHCI ( Intel Q963/965 chipset with ICH8 southbridge).

But it's not available in the bios settings and in order to get the best performance out of the drive I need it to be able to update the bios on the drive and set the interface speed.

Would it be possible to force AHCI mode through the device manager using W7 Home Premium as my os?

I can always use the drive in something else if there is no fix

    Thanks Ian.

I found this on google. This where I found it http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=354428Yes there is. Boot in IDE mode, and copy the following into notepad, and save as a .reg file. Then double click on it, and okay it to install.

    Code:

Reboot (important!), and set AHCI mode (important! must be done be
fore trying to install the performance driver).
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci] "Start "=dword:00000000

Then download and install (or download beforehand) the Intel AHCI performance driver:
    http://www.station-drivers.com/telec...ivers.com).exe
    (its also for RAID etc).

    Its on http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel%20raid.htm

Don't download the 11.x series yet, they're alpha (pre-beta) and unstable. The 11.0.x is somewhat stable (seemingly) but are several months older than the 10.8's, which seem to work better anyway (they're the proper Intel released ones).

    Reboot

Thanks very much for that info Lj5o, I'll give it a try tomorrow.

I've left the machine at a friends house, my old drive is going in his machine.

I've just downloaded ASC Ver 6 Beta, they're offering a free full version for the best feed back from testing!

    Regards Ian.

If Dells custom BIOS doesn't support setting AHCI mode you'll be out of luck.

I have a Dell Latitude (D820) with the same problem.

Yes, but it is of NO use if you can't set AHCI in your BIOS. That is the first requirement!

Note the the person in your post says:

    Thanks for trying, regards Ian.
