My daughter has a Dell Latitude E5520 laptop running Windows 7. She got it while at college in November 2011. We ordered it through Dell but there was also some kind of connection with her school as well resulting in a discount. She's been having various problems with it for some time and wants to replace it. The latest problem is it won't boot up. She gets a message that says, Windows Boot Manager, Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings and then click next.
    3. Click Repair your computer.
    status 0xc000000f
info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

She doesn't think she has her windows installation disc. With moving back and forth to college several times in the ensuing years, I suspect she has lost it.

I think she is going to end up getting a new laptop, but I think she needs to get this one to boot up if she has any hope of transferring things off it, like her files, etc. We're also curious about what size hard drive she currently has. We'd like to know so she can compare that to what's available on the new laptops she is looking at.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Bucksone. If you had a Windows 7 DVD then I could help you repair the machine so you can get it working but since Microsoft doesn't allow OEM users to download any of its Windows 7 ISO files to create their own Windows 7 DVD's anymore you are out of luck. :(

If you need to get the data off the hard drive anyway then you can take the hard drive out of the laptop and hook it up to another computer using this, Vantec 2.5 "/3.5 "/5.25" SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter - Model CB-ISATAU2.

If you have the service tag(located on bottom of PC) Call dell to see if they can send you a set of recovery discs.

I called Dell and they had me run diagnostic tests (tapping F12 while turning on the computer) which they said indicated the hard drive needed replaced. She is going to buy a new laptop instead, as she has had numerous problems with this one and doesn't want to throw good money after bad. She hadn't backed up any of her files, (yes, we had a long talk about this tonight) so we took it to a local shop to see if they can recover any data for her.
I do have a further question. Of the two new laptops she is considering buying, one has a 500gb standard type of hard drive and the other has a 128gb solid state drive. She is leaning toward the second one, even though it is more expensive. She is hoping the solid state drive will hold up better. My concern is that it is so much smaller. Her current laptop has a 500gb drive. I don't know much about solid state drives. Is there any difference in how much they can store? In other words, can the 128gb store more because it is a solid state drive?
    Thanks.

Nope. The capacity is set and can't be changed so if the SSD is 128 GB's in size then that's how big it is. Did your daughter know how much space she was using on the old laptop? If she had less than 100 GB's of data on the old laptop then I would say you can get the laptop with the 128 GB SSD.

Can you list the specs of each laptop so I can see what the configuration of each machine is?

She ended up not buying either of the laptops she was considering and bought one with a 1TB hard drive instead.
    Thanks for the help.
