I need help. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to do this?

When you go start/search/files and folders

If you type in say the letter "g" in the search box, all searches that you have made beginning with "g" comes up. How do you stop this from happening or delete those searches from memory?

    Thank you

Go to Start/Run type regedit and Back up your registry then navigate to this value:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU

In the right pane delete any entry you don't want.

If you don't like getting into the registry, Use the paranoia tab on TweakUI.:)

If you're running Xp and perhaps with SP1 installed, look for this key or something like it:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}\FilesNamedMRU

    Your {long string part may be different, let me know}

I'm guessing that the IE history and Windows Explorer history have been combined by SP1, just a WAG. All I really know is, it works to clear my Find memory of the Search Assistant that i rarely use since it's lame.

Take a look at Agent Ransack (Free) It's head and shoulders above Windows Search Ass.. and has a History clear button on its own taskbar, how nice.

I knew that but thanks for the tip.

You may have to resort to the Old Fashioned Method. Run Regedit and do a search for some item on your Find History list. To make it easier and faster, first do a new Find for some file with a strange name (perhaps zzyzx) so it will be on the list. Then use it for the Regedit search criteria. That should show you where this stuff is hiding. You may yet be surprised to see that it's in bed with IE. :)

    Good luck

That's worth a shot but you may have to live with that button on board. That's not really hurting you anyway. Try to forget it.

Please post the Reg path for the "Find History" key you found so future ME'er can share.

Apparently HippoTank has pulled off without reporting where he found the "Find History ".

Just so the the thread has some future value, the key in question, when using XP Home, is

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}\FilesNamedMRU

so the Internet Explorer/Windows Explorer History connection is verified.

Ooooo.. I get what you mean now....

    The one I used was:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}\FilesNamedMRU

    Thanx again!

    Can you be more explicit?

Normally you use the * with the letter (word) you're looking for and it only searches for that keyword. Example:

*.tmp will list only the tmp files.

    Is that what you mean.
