I am luck enough to of recieved the W32.pinfi virus though an email...

I need to delete a ***.tmp (* = ramdom caracters) to kill the virus but when I do I get:

"Blah, Blah, Blah.... WRITE PROTECTED ....Blah, Blah, Blah "

I run XP Home and I don't have the CDRom! Duh!

If anyone else has beat this virus I would REALLY like to get help from you (Maybe walking me thought the steps on MSN/AIM!?!)

    Thank you,

    Gary Maton

Ps. Norton doesn't work at all with this virus - It quarentined all my files and then didn't restore them properly therefore leaving me worse of than I was in the first place. McAfee seems good but I must kill this ***.tmp first!

    Hi Gary!

I don´t use WinXP myself but if the *.tmp file is write protected, find it in Explorer, right-click and choose properties, untick the write-protect marker. If it works You should be able to delete the file now.

    Hope this helps,
    Christer

YES FORMATTING WILL WIPE YOUR DISK!!!!!!!

To remove this file boot to Safe mode, find and delete from there.

Do you have AV software on your PC? If so, sounds like it didn't clean things very well. Try Housecall , a free online scanner and see if it makes things better for you.

Moving this to the Security/Virus section.

Do what Mike said and delete the temp file from Safe mode. Then edit your registry --

. Click Start, and then click Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)
    b. Type regedit, and then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)
    c. Navigate to the key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

    d. In the right pane, delete the value: PINF
    e. Exit the Registry Editor.
