I have one administrator account on XP (Paul). I have noticed some slowing recently, and was thinking of reinstalling XP (or even putting Vista back onto it). I decided to do it the quick and easy way, according to this blogger:
    http://shippingseven.blogspot.com/2008/01/try-this-instead.html

Which is to delete not the account, but the user profile, for Paul, and then logging back in as Paul. It would have the effect of a reinstall without having to actually reinstall most of my programs and drivers. This supposedly can be done by logging in as another user, and then deleting the profile from Paul. I have created a new admin user account (Temp), but I was unable to actually delete the Paul profile, from the Properties/Advanced tab.

    (1) does this strategy make sense? The guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and claimed to be working on 7 before it was released to the public.

    (2) was i unable to delete the profile for Paul, because it is an admin account? If so, what is the proper way to go about deleting that profile? I did google this, but only saw different ways of doing what I was trying to do (right-click on My Computer, or accessing the Control Panel). Why were the options to delete my profile greyed out?

Hi Paul. If you want to optimize and speed up your computer without removing your current profile then I can provide you with instructions with how to do this.

If you would prefer to just delete your current profile and create a new one then we can start with that first.

Also just removing and creating a new profile will help boost your computers performance in the short run but in the long run your computers performance could still degrade over time especially since your are still keeping the same programs installed and not actually uninstalling anything apart from creating a new user.

Lets get started with removing your old profile:

    1. Log on as the Temp user that you had already created. On the Temp user account make sure the account has administrative privledges.
    2. On the Temp user account click Start< Control Panel< User Accounts< User Accounts.
    3. Click on the Paul account which is the one you want to remove.
    4. Click on Delete Account.
    5. When asked whether or not you want to keep or delete the files that are associated with the account click on the Remove Files button.
    6. Finally click on the Remove Account button.
    7. Reboot the PC.
    8. After the PC has been rebooted log on as the Temp account.
    9. Create a new account named Paul which I assume would be the name of the new account.
    10. Log off of the Temp account.
    11. Log on as the new Paul account.
    12. Once your new settings are loaded for the new account follow the same instructions to delete the Temp account from your PC.

Note: Before you start removing user accounts make sure you backup your personal files on your PC in case something goes wrong. Especially since when you remove the old Paul account all of your personal files such as your documents will be erased so back them up.

Let me know if you run into any difficulties.

Thanks Evan. Yeah I googled after I posted and saw someone explain to reboot first. I did that and then was able to delete the user profile. I always keep my docs on a separate partition so those are always there.

As a matter of fact, the advice in the blog post said not to delete the user account, but only the user profile, so you don't have to reinstall all those programs and drivers. I'll see if this does it. If not, I'll just go with a fresh installation of Vista.... and if not, then a fresh install of XP. Thanks again Evan.
