For months I have kept my machine free from spyware. I use Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy (including TeaTimer), and Spywareblaster. It's been so satisfying to see that Congratulations, no immediate threat found message every week! Imagine my dismay when yesterday's scan came up with about 150 problems. I knew I had problems when Zone Alarm alerted me that Internet Explorer wanted to access the internet, when I wasn't doing anything. I recognized that sign!
Ok, I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot several times, and there are always a few problems they can't get rid of. One that springs to mind is something called IE Optimizer. I've downloaded the latest version of Hijack This and am submitting the scan log for review by the learned people on this board.

As usual, thanks in advance for any help.

I'm no expert on HJT logs so please wait for one of
    :)

In the meantime - for continuous, monitoring, autoscanning and auto updates this is recommended - Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1

First, create a new folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe to that folder.

Make sure you are using the current version of Ad-aware (SE 1.5) and check for updates.

Download RegSeeker and extract to it's own folder.

Go into system services (start>run, type services.msc) and look for Wintools. If present, right click>properties, stop the service and set to disabled. Apply and OK out.

Open Spybot and turn off TeaTimer. Verify in Task Manager that it has stopped running.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [738S37T] chkni11.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

You will need to turn off systen restore.

    Reboot to safe mode.
I didn't see any signs of Internet Optimizer running, but search the drive for files and delete if found.
Open C:\Program Files\Common files and delete the folder WinTools.
Open C:\WINNT\System32 and delete the file chkni11.exe.
    Empty ALL Temp folders.
Open C:\WINNT\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open RegSeeker. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Delete all.
    Empty the recycle bin.
Open Ad-aware and run a full scan. Delete all it finds.

Reboot back into Windows and post a new HJT log.

    Help!
I made it as far as the reboot in safe mode step, when I ran into big trouble. My computer won't reboot. I've been having some issues booting up since this past weekend. I had some difficulties installing a new video card. After installing the card, my computer would take almost five minutes to boot up. On the monitor screen I would get a message saying the monitor was working correctly and to check the power cables, etc. This is the message the computer always gets when the monitor is powered up but the computer isn't. In this case, however, the computer is also getting power (lights on the front of it are on), but nothing happens for about five minutes. Then it would boot into Windows. It would seem to skip the step where you could press F8 to go to Safe Mode, or F10, I believe, to get into the BIOS, or F2 for Settings. I felt this was related to the video card installation and disabling the onboard video in the BIOS. I planned to deal with this after correcting this spyware problem, which I felt was more pressing. I mention all this, as it was because of this that I couldn't get into Safe Mode by pressing F8. So, instead, I did the Start>Run>msconfig thing. On the Startup tab, I believe it's called, I checked Safeboot. I tried to reboot, and I get nothing. After five to ten minutes, the monitor seems to go into hibernation or something, as the little green light on the front of it turns amber.
So, here I find myself at my local public library, on one of their computers, racing to finish this before they close. The staff are circling the computers, pushing in chairs, and eyeing me. I guess that means it's closing time.
So, any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Help!

OK , we'll try per noahdfear's "heads up" on your dilemma. This is going to require a little patience and a "go slow" one step at a time approach.

First thing we'll try although chances are minimal, from a complete machine off state, try booting while tapping the Ctrl key constantly. If you get some action and it appears you are starting up with things visible, then immediately start tapping the F8 key and try to get into safe mode and continue with Dave's instructions.

If No Soap - pull the power cord from the back of your computer and open up your case. You now will have to locate the ATX power header (big white plug with all those wires) and disconnect it from your motherboard. Now, put on your glasses and get a flashlight. Locate the CMOS 3 pin plug which will be in close proximaty to that little round button battery. There will be a jumper on it and the jumper will be on pins 1&2. Remove that jumper and put it on pins 2&3 for 10 seconds and then put it back. Now, because of your ATI All in Wonder problems (we'll come back to those) remove your video card. Now reconnect the ATX Power header. Plug your machine back in and try booting into your BIOS setup. Once there, revert back to your on-board video and set everyhting else to default or if you know your previous settings - set them up now and exit the BIOS, saving changes.

Now boot into Safe mode and uninstall all of your ATI A-I-W drivers and associated software if possible. Then - back to Dave's instructions. I'll try to follow this thread and once you've got that machine cleaned up, we'll get back to your All In Wonder card, but first things first.

Now, one question for you - How does that librarian look without her glasses?

Good Luck - will try to stay with this thread for a while.

    ;)

Well, the fact that I am typing this on my own computer is a good sign. I began following Rockster2u's instructions. As expected, the tapping the Ctrl key didn't work, so I opened up the case. I couldn't find the CMOS plug. The following link should lead to a photo of my motherboard, from Gateway's website.
    http://support.gateway.com/s//PC/310_Series/Shared/2520218/2520218nv.shtml
So, I went ahead and removed the video card. I was able now to boot the computer up (Yeah!). I went into the BIOS and reversed the only thing I had changed when I first installed the video card last week. This was under the Advanced tab, Video Configuration, Primary Video Adapter. I had changed it from AGP to PCI, so I changed it back to AGP. Next, I booted into Safe Mode, went to Add/Remove Programs, and was able to uninstall most of the ATI stuff. Some stuff it said couldn't be removed in Safe Mode, so I uninstalled that stuff later once I was back in regular Windows.
Then it was back to the Spyware stuff. I had followed Noahdfear's instructions up to the rebooting in safe mode event. I didn't find Wintools in Start>Run, services.msc, and I couldn't figure out how to turn off TeaTimer from within Spybot, so I did so in Task Manager. After being rescued by Rockster2U, I continued where I left off. I couldn't find the file chkni11.exe in C:\WINNT\System 32. My Adaware scan came up with about 270 items which I deleted. My new HJT log will be posted below.
