So basically, whenever I try and delete or move a file (I'm assuming the deleting problem is rooted in the moving problem, since deletion is just moving to the recylcing bin), that progress bar either fills up the entire way and doesn't go, or it just keeps calculating how long it will take or w/e, and that light green bar that hyperactively keeps moving, well, keeps moving and never ends. I have to restart explorer.exe from the task manager, and then when I go back it's all done. So I can delete and move files, but that progress bar just never leaves.

When I rename a file, the window I do it in locks up. So if it is desktop, the desktop locks up. If it is my personal folder, the personal folder locks up. Like moving/deleting, I have to restart explorer.exe.

I downloaded Unlocker, and it told me none of my files are locked up. I can delete stuff with it just fine, but that's because it deletes it off the face of the earth, and not move it to the recycling bin. The same problem happens when I move it though, but when I rename a file using it, the moving problem occurs (bar fills up, and just stops).

This is a huge problem, because it means I can't delete files using non-explorer programs (like mediamonkey), and it also means that everytime someone sends me something through MSN, my MSN locks up because it tries to move the file. Also, when I install some things, it can't fully install because it can either not delete a file, or it can't move it.

    So yeah, thanks.

    P.S. Yes, I have restarted.

    Hi Riff

    Welcome to the BBS!

Are you running under a Restricted account or full Admin?

Make sure you have Administrator privilages.

You have 1 or 2 possibilities for the cause of this issue.

A secuity issue or a misconfiguration.

    Lets begin with the below.

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do only the below

    Repair Permissions

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back to us.

    Mike

Thanks for the reply! I'm admin so I have full permission. Just to make sure, do you mean XP cd or Vista cd? Just making sure, since I don't mess up my pc (again) :)

EDIT: Do you recommend downloading Vista SP1? I don't think I have it.

EDIT 2: Dial-a-Fix doesn't seem to work for Vista :(

    Hi Riff

Sorry I just forgot I was in the Vista Forum.

You are correct DAF has not been updated for Vista yet sorry!

Hmmm on the Vista update to SP1 I would try to resolve any issues before updating. As those issues could very well cause problems and put you worse off.

Do you have any other issues even seemly unrelated to this?

Go into User Accounts and turn off UAC (User Account Control).

Once off see if this helps by trying to delete something.

    Also lets do some houskeeping:

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have. Run repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

D/L and install CCleaner: Clean temps and registry. Run both (temp and registry) repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/bui...wnloading-slim

    Reboot

    Retest for the issue.

    Report back!

    OK Riff

Lets see if we can narrow it down some.

Create a new User (profile) call it Supervisor give it Admin rights.

Log in and test if the issue exists here. If so it is an entire system isssue, if not it is only on your other logon.

    Let me know!

    Sorry Riff

First 3 days this week I was working out of the office 6am-11pm. I was burried!

Back in office today but still busy but at least not traveling.

    OK one more test.

Boot to Safe Mode and test it. Regular Safe Mode not with networking.

    Let me know.

I am composing a post about this offline and will post back in about 20-30 mins.

We now need to rule out Malware.

Do the below in order given.

Also go here read and understand, then post a HJT and DSS logs (both)
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/announcement.php?f=41

    Next
    D/L Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe
No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot. It may run minimized to the status bar if it finds anything it will pop up.

    Next get and run
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
If this program finds much reboot to safe Mode and run it again.

D/L install update and run HazardShield http://www.orbitech.org/hazardshield.html
    use full with registry scan

Let me know what they found.

After the above reboot and post new HJT and DSS logs.

That's ok! Sorry to be so pushy. I'm really glad you replied.

Strangely enough, it seems to be fine now. I have no idea what I did. I think it may have been to do with Search. On another forum, I read that someone could not rename their files, and they went to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and disabled Windows Search. I did just the same, but the problem seemed to persist. I then went on the computer again, and went to Safe Mode. Eureka! Nothing seemed to go wrong. I thought it was just because it was Safe Mode though. So I went on normal mode, and I deleted something, and it was gone. No calculating time remaining. So I'm attributing it to disabling Windows Search service. So yeah, thanks for your help :) If the problem comes back again, I'll reply again.
