How do delete index.dat, ntuser.log and files of this nature. Everytime I try to delete any file of this nature I get a message the reads "cannot delete this file it is being used by another person or program. Please close all other running programs and try again." Also how do you create a *.bat file. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. I'm running Win XP Pro

    Hi lj50,

As far as I know, deleting index.dat is impossible. Ive been told that this holds data from everything thats been done on your system, every web page youve been on, program youve installed and so on.

Someone else may know differently though.

There is no mystry about the index.dat files.

They do contain private info that remains even after temps are deleted and I do like to remove them regularly.

But Gordie they are not that esoteric or all encompassing.

Spider is an execllent program and will do the job.

But they can easily be deleted in windows. Here is how and why.

For Xp and 2K! You cannot delete index.dat files that are open.

If you have one other user logon on any XP or 2K you will be able to delete the unlogged on index.dats. Then log off and back on as the other user and you will be able to delete the other index.dat files.

This depends on the VIEW set to show hidden and system system files. Do a search for index.dat and delete them all. it will refuse to delete the current users index.dat but that is OK when you log on as a different user it will get this one.

REGSEEKER! Yes it is a very good registry cleaner. It does not clean index.dat files. It is a powerful tool. Be careful.

I´ve never used v1.04. On the recommendation of Bruce Krymow I´ve used v1.16. It has been beta since it was released on 11 May 1999.

Mike, do You have bad experience from v1.16 or is Your recommendation based on the fact that it´s a beta?

Nothing has been recorded in the history section of the webpage since 9 September 2001. Anyone who knows why?

I didn't remember or know that 1.16 was a beta. That is the one I have been using.

When he asked about a beta I thought there was something even newer that he was speaking of.

My ver 1.6 is not documented in the program itself as a beta, which is the protcol to be used by good programmers. To clearly identifiy a beta version. Usually at least by ver 1.6B

My opinion is that 1.6 is not a beta but that the web site has not been updated.

But in any case LJ50 get ver 1.6.

    Thanks for noticing Christer.

Well, Mike, as You may have noticed I´m easily confused ...... ...... :D

In the release notes it says "This is the newest beta-version ......" but as You point out, no "beta" in the version number.

    That should be ver 1.16 ...... ;) ...... shouldn´t it?

    Christer..............

    One of the days Alice.....

One of these days, KA POW YAW!

    Lol!

Thanks Christer, I do bear watching!

At work when my bossman needs some bad computer problem fixed, I know he really has a mess when comes to me saying "how bout rememember what you forgot about...... "

Once they called me into a meeting out of the blue no time to think at all and asked me if something could be done on the system.

    I said no!

They asked me a couple of more questions to which I answered "no "! Then they dismissed me. As I was going out the door, I heard my bossman saying " don't worry he'll remember tomorrow ".

    Know what! I did!

They know me better than I know myself! Lol! Now some of you guys are getting on to me too!

Well I'll go ahead and tell you the rest. Everything I do is last minute, most of that is late, but it does get done!

    Lol!

    Naah

He don't spur me. He knows I don't take to spurs! Smile!

Besides we are best friends and have worked togather for 17 years.

And he wasn't whispering nor even talking to me, he meant it!

So it's the 1.6V. Cool. I forgot what my original post was about. Oh I remember it's that index.dat thing. What time did you remember what you had to remember. Don't forget 2:00am is considered tomorrow. That's the time I usually remember things. Thanks for all your help.
