I am working on this computer, This guy deleted explorer.exe from his startup.... but he did not leave me a disk, so I cannot repair it. Do you know any way to macguyver it onto the system? I tried the Safe-Mode administrator, and that worked fine... so he did not delete it from his computer just startup.. thats good, lol

    Thanks,
    Jason

System Restore to a date before the problem started?

The entries you see in the startup are all shortcuts to the programs. So if you have deleted anything from it just create a new shortcut & place it where ever you want it in the menu.

absentmindedJWC--The more I think about your question, the less sure I am about what you are asking. What is happening because explorer.exe has been deleted? Blank screen? Error messages? Cannot open Windows Explorer?
Have you run a Search for explorer.exe? In WinXP it resides in C:\Windows. Perhaps there is a copy in the I386 or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE folders.
    See this article
    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1061853506
    Maybe a reinstall of SP2?
Or the comment about using TaskManager here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263201&sd=tech

But if none of the above helps, I would still suggest a System Restore (perhaps from SafeMode if necessary) because it could be simplest.

explorer.exe does not have to be started at boot or running for Windows to function.

If explorer.exe is in the windows folder, then you would have to edit the registry to get it to not start up.

As Jim posted, explorer.exe is in the Windows folder and in \WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386, and AFAIK, not in the start menu or in any startup menu that the user can access.

It would be great if absentmindedJWC would post back :)

Are we talking about the 'shortcut' to Windows Explorer on the Start menu?
If that's the case... just make a new shortcut to "explorer.exe" that is found in the Windows folder on the system drive (normally 'C').
Target is: "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe" (without the quotes). HTH

    B

Mr. B--Good point. I was going back to this thread to add that question.
Since we really do not know what the situation is, I hope we will hear back from absentmindedJWC soon.
