Hi, please can anyone help me, I have managed to delete photos from my digi camera having asumed that I had backed them onto a cd! I had previously downloaded them from my camera to my laptop and then deleted them (and emptied the recycle bin!)on the assumption that they were saved! Is there anyway round this problem?

Recuva (pronounced "recover ") is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!

Thanks very much Pete for your input, have done recuva and it has brought up loads of jpg items but no preview available so don't know which ones I need, do I have to tick all boxes to recover? also it suggests restoring them to a different drive? what does this mean please - sorry I am such a wuss!!

I am not familiar with Recuva although it is a well respected piece of software - hence my alternative suggestion :)

I woold create a folder on your hard drive - e.g. Recovered Images and recover those jpgs to that folder - the 'other drive' warning - there is a risk that writing the recovered files to the drive may overwrite the space currently occupied by the deleted files, but flagged by Windows as free space. If you don't have an external drive or USB stick that is a risk you have to take.

If the recovered files are OK you can view thumbnails in Windows Explorer and sort out those that you want.

If you have only recently deleted the jpgs from your camera card and you have a card reader get Recuva to scan just the card and then save to hard drive.

Pete, have created folder and recovered a few jpg pics to it but when I click on jpg to view it is saying no preview available? would I be better going down PC Smart Recovery/File Recovery route?

You can try, but I guess you will have the same result .....

What is the time scale between deleting the jpgs from your hard drive and today's attempted recovery? I suspect that they have been partly overwritten.

I would recover all the jpgs and see if any are OK - the longer the time span between deletion and attempted recovery the lower the chances of recovery.

I deleted pics around 12.30pm today and tried to recover about 4 hours later! I can get them back if I pay approx £26 via CardRecovery website -I have downloaded their free trial and all my pics are there - guess I have to evaluate whether pics are worth it - Thanks for all your help anyway.

I would try PC Inspector before splashing out that sort of money and the other thought is when you connect your camera to the computer the computer should see it as a drive - try a direct recover from the card that way.

Point the recovery software to that drive - and include all sub folders if the option is given.

Pete, have managed to retrieve most of pics via recovery now burned to CD successfully - thanks for your help, before I sign off, I have noticed that my pictures and my music are not on my start menu - have got down right click on start properties etc route which is showing them as display as link - have tried unticking and reticking boxes but no success, any suggestions?

Delighted to hear that you managed to recover most of your images - and have backed them up :)

Would prefer you to start a new thread on the other issue - as I run XP in Classic mode aka Win 98 and always remove My Pictures and My Music folders (I never use them). I am at a disadvantage in trying to sort that one out. I also move My Documents to another drive which may further complicate matters.
