I have a PC that is left on at night, in the morning it is locked by my user and I use ctl-alt-del to unlock and bring up the desktop. I keep shortcuts to Word and Excel documents on my desktop so I can quickly access, but I change these shortcuts every few days as new documents are emailed to me that are more up to date, so I delete the old shortcut and create a new one to the new document. When I come in the next morning, however, the deleted shortcuts from the day before are back on my desktop with the new ones. What am I doing wrong.

You might try emptying the recycle bin after you delete the old shortcuts.

But you also might want to consider a slightly different approach. You can make a desktop shortcut to Windows Explorer that will open in a specific folder.

So if you had a folder documents and under that new-doc, old-doc, new-ss, old-ss, you could save the new versions to the new-xx folder, move the outdated one to the old-xx folder and then do two desktop shortcuts.

    %windir%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\documents\new-doc

    %windir%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\documents\new-ss

Note there are no spaces after /n
