I suspect that your Deleted Items.dbx folder is corrupted or too large - the theoretical max is 2 GB, but OE plays up if .dbx files get close to that value - 300Mb max is a safe bet.

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start > Run.

In Win XP the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start > Control Panel > Folder Options Icon > View, or in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View.

With OE closed, find the Deleted Items.dbx file and delete it. A new Deleted Items folder will be created automatically when you open OE. You should be able to delete messages now.

Remember to go back to Folder Options and select 'Do not show hidden files and folders' when done.

Unlikely, but it's a task that should be done from time to time.

Thank you very much Pete did all you advised but unfortunately it did not work.Never mind I got rid of the deleted items.I have since found that if I press my space bar this will delete. Don't understand what has happened at all.

Also thank you James but I do compact my folders on a regular basis.
