    Hi All

Here is what I have -

Compaq Presario, 700MHZ, 20 GB Hard drive, partitioned 15GB is the C drive and 5GB for a D drive.
The computer originally was shipped with Windows ME.

    My questions are -

    1. When I received this computer (new) the D drive has a name of SYSTEM_SAV with about 2GBs used. I have no idea what this 2GB contains.
I have now upgraded to Windows XP. Can I safely delete everything from the D drive to free up this space?

    2. After I did the Windows XP over Windows ME upgrade I now have about 4.2GB used, before the upgrade I was about 1.8 GB used.
Are there some files now I can delete from the Windows ME that I no longer need? I heard or read some where that Windows makes a backup copy of your old OS in case you want to go back, I have no intentions of going back, I would rather have the disk space.

    Thanks a bunch in advance.

    mopar.

    1. Can't answer without knowing what is on the drive. What sort of files for instance and a few .exe names.

    2. Go to Add/Remove and you should find the "revert" thing. Remove it.

    Don't have a "revert" thing.

File names, hmmmmm a bunch, mostly just numbers eg. the first folder is named CPQDRV with about 28 sub folders, each of these folders contain a folder named 15370, 15371 etc. These folders contain folders these names are 002, 003 etc.
I did find a TXT file, after reading this file it appears this may be to do with the old Windows ME installation.
Most of the dates on any of the files I looked at are June\2000.

I feel brave, maybe I'll delete them.

    Thanks newt

Mopar - you really should have a "revert" entry in there somewhere. Did you check the Windows section of add/remove?

    Hi Newt

    No "revert "
I'm not sure what you mean by Windows section. I checked in both the category view as well as the classic view, these appear to be the same thing but no revert.

I evan tried doing a search on revert but no luck.

    Thanks

    mopar.

    Just fdisk it!

If you or someone you know can reformat your HDD and just install the XP by itself, you'll be miles ahead from where you are now.

You can use an XP Upgrade disc without having the POS WinMe on the drive at all. XP will prompt you in the installation procedure when to insert the old WinMe disc into the CD drive. This is to confirm that you are qualified for the upgrade version.

I believe the other post referring to "Revert" may have been in relation to GoBack or System Restore, but I think with an XP overlay on top of Win ME, you're going to have to live with what you have now, or wipe the drive and start with a clean install.

Most of the people complaining about their XP upgrade are the ones who did it by installing on top of a Win 9x version, and it's a really bad idea, IMO.

    Good luck!
    ;)

mopar - I totally, completely, 100% agree with DocBlase.

But if you don't want to go thru that, lets take another try at the uninstall/removal of the old ME stuff. I'll strictly be describing what shows up with XP-Pro but in this case I imagine XP-Home will look pretty much the same. And I'm going based on articles since I have not done or seen exactly how things look after a ME to XP upgrade.

When you start the add/remove window, it will default to opening the Change or Remove Programs section. That probably isn't where the item is. Try opening the Add/Remove Windows Component section (button is on the left and down some) and look around there. It may be a main option or may be a sub-option under one of the main categories. If still nothing, edit your sysoc.inf file and remove all the occurances of the work "hide ". Leave the commas though so where you had ,hide, you will now have ,,

You might want to take a look at Paul Thurott's article where you will find lots of good information including
He pretty much always knows whereof he speaks so I would expect to find the option there somewhere. He also gives some excellent reasons for doing a clean XP install vs. an upgrade.

    Thanks DocBlase and Newt

The more I read and hear about upgrade or clean install I think the only way is to format and re-install.

    Thanks again
