In my Windows 98 SE, there's a folder called Internet Logs, made up mostly of .TMP files. Is it safe to delete these? I assume from the name that they record your travels on the Net, but when I open one up in Wordpad, a bunch of gobbledygook appears, so I can't tell exactly what they are. And there's nothing in Windows Help about them.

Also, the biggest file is "tvDebug.log ". I can't open it to find out what it is because it is "being used right now ". Does anyone here know about that particular file?

I'd like to delete these files, they're at about 30 MBs now, but would like to know what they are first.

    Thanks.

    Internet Logs is ZoneAlarms folder.

All the TMP files can be deleted. You should also find a LDB and RDB file which are ZA's config file. And a TXT file if you are logging alerts.

    Phil,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Yes, there are LDB and RDB files, which I won't delete of course, but I don't know about "tvDebug.log ". It sounds like part of the program but I can'
t find any info about it.

    Hi Tom.

If it's TVdebug.log, and in C:|Windows\Internet Logs, then it is debugging information from Zone Alarm. I'd leave it unless it is causing you specific problems.

I believe that TV stands for True Vector, which is part of ZA. I don't know what version of ZA you are running but on mine there is an option to untick "log alerts to a file " have a hunt around and see if you can find something on yours.

    Hope this helps.

    Amie

    Hi Amie,

Darn right it helped. I had assumed the "tv" was for television (streaming video, maybe?), but in a Zone Alarm folder, true Vector makes sense.

The old version of ZA free had the option of logging alerts or not. I don't see that option on the new version, but I prefer to log the alerts anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. At least, now I know where to go to delete the old logs. (The old version also had the "delete log" option on the interface, which the new one doesn't; newer isn't necessarily better, imho).

Thank you for the help, Amie.

On the new version, go to "Logs and Alerts" > click the "Main" tab > then select "Advanced ". You'll see where you can change logging and even place the log files where you choose.

I stuck mine in the C:\Temp folder and they get dumped when I dump the other trash.

    Zephyr,

Ah, so it is. Don't know how I missed that (insert red-faced smiley here). Thanks.
