Is there a way to open O.E read an email and delete it and not have the next email open? I know you can do it by not deleting the previous, but thats a pain. (I have preview pane turned off).

XP SP2 Home Edition O.E 6 with all the latest and greatest updates. :)

Alicia J--Good question. If you have no better responses, perhaps you can figure out this webpage's suggestion and figure it out. (I have no idea what "<Key-D>" means)
    http://www.beedub.com/exmh/Keys.html
It seems to involve installing a program called Exmh,
    http://beedub.com/exmh/
but I am about to shutdown and could not study it. Obviously I have not used it. :)

The example he linked is for a Unix GUI so wouldn't apply to your PC.

Outlook allows what you want but I'm not aware of any way to do it in OE.

Open the email and read it. If you want to delete it without the next one opening, close it and right click on the header for the email in the list of headers and choose delete. It's the only way I know of.

This might be a little off the wall, but I was having the same problem as you just described. My fix for this was to make folders in OE6 for, say, WindowsBBS.com, a certain friend, and a few others.

I then went to tools/message rules/mail, and I made special rules that would filter certain e-mails into those particular folders.

I also leave the folders list open so I can see what goes where.

For example, I talk on the Meguiar's car forum a lot and all of their e-mailers get filtered to that folder. I can open and delete all of their mail without OE6 accidently opening something in another folder, like the inbox for example.

All of my unfiltered e-mails, spam, etc. go to the inbox, and I can scan the subject lines for unwanted mail and delete it before opening it.

This is not a perfect system by any means, but it allows me to be more selective in what I want to open, and what I don't want to open.

I hope I made a little sense here, because I'm not the best in the world at explaining things like I understand them. :D

Zander thats what I'm currently doing, and it seems tedious. It's the only way I know how to do it too.

James I guess that could be a work around but I get email from all kinds of places. It might be an idea for forum notifications, but I'm not sure it would help me with other emails in my in box. Sometimes emails are being delivered as I'm reading others.

My interest in this is for security. I just don't want to open something I shouldn't, just because I've deleted the previous one and it's the next in the list. :)

    I understand.

I don't get a lot of spam (so far), so it works pretty good for me.

Another option might be to use a spam program like Mail Washer or something....A friend tried it and it worked beautiful they said.

First go to view/ layout and disable the preview pane.

Then you can right click a selected message and choose move to trash (or any other folder of your choice).

    Or right click / delete

I always suggest disabling the preview pane since
    1. Opening a peice of spam in the preview pane can allow the spammer to identify your email address as valid and he will then sell it to other spammers. This is done with a webbug http://www.bugnosis.org/faq.html a 1x1 pixel gif with a unique identifier number. It places a call to a web server for the gif (which is invisible) and the server logs the call and it can be compared to a list of which email address had which identifier.

    2. Many viruses these days can install from an infected page. A html page in email is just as dangerous and previewing it can place the call which installs the virus. No detection from your antivirus since the email itself was clean, but opening it downloads the virus over a web page.

    Oshwyn5,

My preview pane is already turned off, because I am aware of the risks of using it. I know I can right click and delete or move an email, but I'm talking about how to prevent opening an email, then deleting it while open, and not have the next email open automatically. It is tedious to close the email I'm reading, delete it and then open the next one. Perhaps this is not possible.

    Hi Alicia,

    FWIW, start from the bottom.

MSN/Hotmail suffers from the same condition.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Alicia,

Sorry for the jargon - short hand for For Whatever It's Worth.

Newt--thanks for the info that that program was for Unix. They sure keep it a dark secret. I was grasping at straws since I was not aware of a way to do what Alicia J wanted in OE.

    charlesvar--Bottoms up, indeed!!

Ah now I get it . You already have the email opened, you have read it and have no desire to keep it, so you want to delete it. But if you click the delete option it goes away , but the next email in queue opens up.

I normally clean up before I open anything, but I will think on this.

    oshwyn5--
And the problem with that is that you do not know if the next message is spam with malware. So you are automatically opening a message you would not have opened otherwise.

Would it help it OE6 was setup to block HTML?

You can't send a virus via text only can you?

James Martin--From a security point of view, your suggestion is good. But also on the Read tab check "Read all messages in Plain Text ", and on the Security tab, check the "Restricted Sites Zone" and "Do not allow attachments..." . In both cases click Apply|OK.
Now the question will be if you can stand these restrictions. :)

Thanks everyone for your ideas and feedback.
And I learnt a new one FWIW :)

From the bottom. Isn't that silly. I never thought of trying that. Now if I could just convince Microsoft that we are not all bottom people, some of us like to play in the middle, or the top. ;)

Yes, changing the sort by date from top to bottom makes it move in the other direction.
(At the top of the list of columns, click date one sorts it most recent at top the other sorts the reverse. )
