    Hi Debbie,
We need more details if we're to help.
For example, What computer, how old, why are you defragging?
The problem could be "third party" software, like viruses, worms, etc., or even hardware. It's not a usual problem for XP in my experience.

You are starting Defrag from the Computer Management console?

If so, from Explorer, select the drive you wish to defrag, right mouse > Properties > Tools > Defrag now.

    Does defrag start ok??

In which case, see if this ms note spplies?

    information about defrag

My computer is about 1 year old and I have windows XP. My defrag used to work then for some unreason it doesn't now. I go to start, accessories, then defrag then the snap in failed to initialize screen comes up. It says Name:unknown CLSID: 43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5

The link in my previous post should apply. You can open the Console by doing

    Start > Run > MMC

You should get the same error, then follow the instructions in the link.

And, in the iterim you should be able to defrag using the other method in the post.

Go to Start > Run, and type each of these commands, with Enter after each, of course:

    regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
    regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

Try the defragmenter. If it still doesn't work, go to your Windows\Inf folder and find drfg.inf. Right-click it and choose Install (you will need your CD).
