    Hello

I have discovered that one of my Outlook Express DBX folders amounts to 1GB dispite when adding the sizes of all the files included I only come to about 50MB.

My Smart Defrag programme cannot defrag the 1GB file and I have tried to split the folder but the size does not change.

My PC works on XP 3SP and Outlook Express is version 6.

    Any suggestions what is wrong?

    Regards

    Olaf

I don't think I quite understand your question but the folder is located here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Olaf Poulsen\Lokale indstillinger\Application Data\Identities\{A3F65F30-116F-4474-B70F-28E208BDF714}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

and all the files in said folder can be opened.

The question was - in other words - which .dbx file - Outbox.dbx, Inbox.dbx, one you made .... ?, but no matter - try this solution ......

In OE create a new folder and name it appropriately - InboxOld, OutboxOld ..... xxxOld if a folder you created and drag all the mails from the existing folder into it.

Close OE and go to ....

    C:\Documents and Settings\Olaf Poulsen\Lokale indstillinger\Application Data\Identities\{A3F65F30-116F-4474-B70F-28E208BDF714}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

and delete the now empty folder.

Open OE - if the .dbx folder in question was a default OE folder - Inbox, Outbox, Sent items , etc it will be automatically recreated. If it was a folder you made just rename the xxxOld folder to xxx and you should be in business.

BTW - I do not think that defraggers defrag .dbx files - these are compressed - effectively defragged - by OE every 100th opening of OE.

    Hello PeteC

As always when you ask Windows BBS you are giving perfect guidances.

It worked and the files in question were defraged now.

I agree with you that it probably won't improve the performance but it became a little kind of sport for me after the number of defraged files had been reduced to a few.

I thought when OE is compressing files, OE also reduces the size of the folder/files but it seems not to be the case.

At least I gained extra space on my drive.

Number of defraged files are now reduced to 3; 2 for Google indexing (2*1 GB), which probably not can reduced. The last one is fidbox.dat relating to Zone Alarm and also sizing 1GB. I am asking ZA what to do. Probably a reinstallment of ZA.

But thanks again for your guidance.

    Best regards
    Olaf

    You're welcome :)

I would add that the maximum size for .dbx files in OE is 2 Gb, but OE often behaves strangely long before that limit is met.

I've marked this thread as 'Resolved', please see .....
