I feel as though I am no longer a 'computer illiterate user', but what I did last night is mind boggling.

I was defragging my hard drive, but I didn't do a disk clean up first. The defrag was taking a long time, so I canceled it and switched to the disk clean up option. After I did that I regretted it. My computer has been running like **** ever since.

Any attempt to defrag/disk clean up now results in very slow scanning...and no real results...very annoying...I am using Windows 2000 if that makes a difference.

Is there anything I can do to correct my error in judgement aside from reformatting?

Any help/advise would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for reading my query,

    Regards,

    Fonzy

Whats your ratio of used to unused space?

If not much space, you'll need to clean up the drive manually to get some space for complete defrag.

This leads to my next question. Can u clean up yr drives manually? i.e. back as much as you can up, delete it, then defrag again, then copy back to a near clean drive.

fonzy - I have done the same as you quite a few times on quite a few machines without causing problems. Something is causing your issues but I don't think cleanly stopping a defrag in progress did the deed.

Give answers to Codecutter's questions. Also two things for you to try - both in the 'can't hurt and may help' category:

    - start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /r

    - download the pagefiledefrag utility from www.sysinternals.com, put it (3 files I think) on your hard drive somewhere, then run it and select to defrag your pagefile and registry hive files at next boot. Then boot.
